Liza Kaye: Youtube parental control prohibits LGPTQ content

Restricted mode is a setting launched by YouTube in December, 2015. In an ideal world, this feature is used to help protect children from viewing inappropriate videos not meant for someone their age to see. For example, a TV show that discusses advanced material, and uses profanity, would be blocked when enabling this mode. However, recently YouTubers have complained that their videos were being blocked for no legitimate reason. LGBTQ You-tubers were heavily protesting because their videos were being hidden. Not only did this decrease their revenue made from video views, but it showed a sense of anti-LGBTQ that has been appearing lately after the recent election. Youtube seemed to be assuming that families and parents would want to restrict videos made by let's say, gay or lesbian people, which just associates LGBTQ members as a negative connoted idea. Fortunately, YouTube has released an apology statement, which has cleared the issue.

This is similar to racism and anti-woman protests that took place once upon a time. These protests are still occurring. However, this showed that when you stand up for your lost rights, you may be able to re-gain them.

  1. OH NO. THE GAY IS CONTAGIOUS. THAT IS WHY STRAIGHT PARENTS HAVE STRAIGHT KIDS AND GAY PARENTS HAVE GAY KIDS. Seriously, if you don't allow children to see people who aren't the societal norm, they usually grow up to be intolerant arses. Gay, bi, trans, ace, and otherwise queer youtube content should not be obscured via automatic parental control. How would conservatives react if all mentions of guns and church were hidden?
