The National School Lunch Program has been around for 71 years. It operates in public schools as well as some private schools and child-care institutions. This program provides nutritionally balanced low-cost or free lunches to children every day. In 1966, the School Breakfast Program, which was designed for "nutritionally needy" children, started as a pilot project, and it received permanent authorization in 1975. Decades later, Congress authorized the reimbursement of snacks served to children enrolled in after-school programs. Under these programs, any child at a participating school may purchase a meal. Local schools set the prices for meals and offer a sliding scale to students depending on family income. Children from families with incomes at or below 130% of the poverty level are eligible for free meals.
This was posted on September 10th 2015, so kind of a while back, but this organization is still around today. I feel like this is such a good corporation because it has helped so many kids and continues to help them today. Prior to reading this article i had not known abut this but I think it was written to let the "nutritionally needy" people know that there is an organization out there to help. This can relate to history because in 1971 there were programs that provided the best in nutrition, nutrition education, and food service for the nation's millions of children in schools around the globe.
