Cheerios Pulls Mascot to Cause Awareness to Dropping Bee Population- Leah Lara

Cheerios has pulled it's mascot Buzz the Bee off of the Honey Nut Cheerios box. This is to draw more awareness to the alarming drop of the honey bee's population. Now bees are  officially on the list of endangered species in the US.  Honey bee's pollinate 35% of the world's food supply which would put as all in a sticky spot without them. Due to parasites, pesticides, and loss of habitat, bee colonies are collapsing around the world. Alongside with removing Buzz from their Cheerio boxes, Cheerios are giving away 100 million packets of wildflower seeds as apart of their #BringBacktheBees campaign.

I am a huge fan of how Cheerios are always taking a stand for  social issues that they believe in. From commercials starring interracial families, to save the bees campaigns, Cheerios stay woke. The fact is that bees are disappearing at an alarming rate, and if we do nothing to stop it, they will disappear completely. Without bees we would unable to enjoy so many of the fruits and vegetables that we love.  Its fantastic that Cheerios is exposing younger generations to these issues, and are introducing ways to combat the problem.

  1. No matter how much coverage the plight of the bees receive, people always seem to ignore it. The issue is not that they make honey, but also that they pollinate so much of the world's food supply that we would have to reinvent how we grow food, potentially using more GMOs. This needs to be taken seriously and I am a big company like Cheerios is bringing awareness.
