Celebs Help to Raise $1 million for Somalia- Abbey Winiger
SUMMARY- Ben Stiler, Collin Kapernick, Jerome Jarre, and Casey Neistat have all come together to help raise $1 million for Somalis facing famine. The power of social media is so strong, and is amazing to see when it is being used for good. It all began when Jerome made a video speaking about a friend in an East African Country had seen famine and all of the families affected by this. 6 million people in Somalia (more than half of its population) are struggling with famine. This created a trend among other social media stars urging Turkish Airlines to send food and take action. The airline agreed to ship a plane full of 60 tons of food over to those in need. A GoFundMe page was created with the goal of reaching $1 million i 10 days, however with the power of social media they exceeded this goal within 19 hours.
ANALYSIS/SYNTHESIS- Before reading this article I ad seen the video of Jerome Jarre speaking about the tragedy going o in Somalia. The campaign was headlining all over Twitter, and was #1 on the top trending list. This article was written by Alexandra King on March 18th, with the point of view in support towards the cause. The shaped the writing because it was in awe of how amazing this charitable act was, and even spoke about what we can do to help the cause even farther. I think that this is so amazing! That just by one video speaking about famine, that a plane full of food is being shipped to help those in need in Somalia. I really do believe in the power of social media, and that it can be used for the greater good.
