Alix Burns: Sick, dying and raped in America's nursing homes

Around the country, there have been reports of rape and sexual assault toward senior citizens in nursing homes. In many of these cases, the victims are unable to speak or fight back, some not even able to identify their perpetuators or fully remember the situation. Even more shockingly, many of the nursing homes involved in these cases move too slowly in carrying out the investigations. Because of systematic failures of failing memories or allegations, it is more difficult for the victims to get justice. Sexual harassment has been a re-occurring problem in work spaces, leading back to poor working conditions in the cotton industry during the nineteenth century.

Elijah Macias- Democrats already cranking up Trump impeachment talk

Summary: Ever since Donald Trumps win of the 2016 election, there has been lots of talk of impeachment. His impeachment is based on two alleged violations: 1- Donald Trump had violated the Emoluments Clause which states " no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State." and 2- The alleged Trump administration's contact with Russia. But these proposals of impeachment have been shot down by republican senators stating that Democrats must have majority in house to impeach anyone.

Analysis: I wish we all could be OK and not have to live in a world where an idiot controls the worlds most powerful country. Trump has proven, within the little time he has been in office, that he makes rash decisions- namely his terrible immigration ban. I wouldn't shed a tear if he was impeached, but if he was that means Pence would have to step in......... So that's great.....
This is very reminiscent of the tea pot dome scandal of Warren G. Harding and his corruption and his incompetence.
I hope everything will be ok in the end, and it usually is, but we will all have to see.

New Cloud Pet Toy Leak Costumer's Privite Infromation: Regan Saldana

Summary:
A new hot toy called CloudPets has been purchased by many families across America. This toy allows children to talk to a loved one or friend through toy to connect with an app on another end. This new tech toy has sold out from many stores and with the 2.2 million users comes more of an issue with the upcoming investigation of the audio, video, and picture leaks that were held ransom by internet hackers. Consumers of this product were alerted of the breach in their information through the app. Although the information was obtained again from the CloudPet company, users are still worried about future breaches in the system and the safety of their children and their information.

Analysis:
The author of this article was written by Selena Larson, a writer for CNN. This article was written on February 27th, 2017 shortly after the hacking of the CloudPet app occurred. My prior knowledge of this topic was of the CloudPet product but not of the system breaches. This surprised me to find out how easy it was for someone to hack information from an app and how many people's information was compromised due to this hacking. The audience for this article was CloudPet users and toy consumers in the U.S. The main idea of this article was the breach in information from users of the CloudPet app and toy. This is significant because it shows consumers and app users that give their information to the create accounts within the app how easy it is for hackers to obtain your account information.

Stuffed Toys Leak Voice Recordings

Angelica Salazar 1st period

This article is talking about innocent 2.2 million little boys and girls' voices being recorded in CloudPets toys. The original purpose of CloudPets toys is to record messages to send to family members, but however, a mistake was made and these recordings where available through an insecure database. It is currently shut down, but because of the small mistake made, many kids and adults feel unsure an weary about their privacy.

All throughout history, people have always been concerned about how secure their privacy is or how involved the government is in it. But knowing that your voice recordings can be out in the internet somewhere shows how terrifying everything can be. It's scary to know what the government has control over and how involved it can be in your life. It's as if you're constantly being watched.

Madelyn Dean- Protesters Gather to Support the Press, From Fox News to The New York Times

At the start of Trumps campaign to the present, he has bashed the media for its so called "fake news". Mostly because of all the negative press he was getting is what started this fit. For the millions that believe all his lies, it frightens many others if Trump supporters began to deface the media therefore taking away freedom of speech/ press. People have been protesting for the support of our news and the bias media it beholds.

This article was written to show that people are willing to take actions in order to maintain these unalienable right of ours. This relates to the court case before WWI over the basis of freedom of speech and fined the man for speaking against the government, for it could have a negative impact on American society.

Alyssa Sartuche - Mom selflessly carries baby without a brain

Summary: Keri Young has been i formed that the baby she was carrying for about 19 weeks did not have a brain. This meant when the baby is born that it was pass away very shortly. Instead of killing the baby, she decided to keep carrying the baby so that the baby's organs can be donated when it's born. Keli You g made this decision because she could not even think about killing a child and if she donated the organ she could be saving someone else's child too.

Analysts: This article was written to inform the audience about how caring people can be and how your actions effect someone's life too. It's amazing to see a person being so selfless and willing to give birth to this baby even though they no something is wrong. Young knew that the baby would not see this world for very long and was going to suffer but she thought she would make the best of it while helping another child's life as well. Right now, it's great to see such kind acts compared to what  we are seeing in the world today.

Sophia Jalilvand: SpaceX to fly two space tourists around the moon in 2018

Summary: Two thrill-seeking individuals (their names have not been released yet) are going to take a "tour" around the moon in 2018. Later this year they are going to start training and undergoing fitness tests for this trip. They are likely paying millions, although the numbers havve not been released yet. SpaceX is paying the Russians $80 million per seat to send them up to the station. They said this is likely not going to be the last trip because others have expressed this interest as well.

Analysis: It is so interesting to see how science and technology are expanding so rapidly! Regular trips up to space may be in our near future, which is extremely fascinating to me. The era of information is really living up to its name. I can't wait to see what people come up with next and how much time it will take until regular space trips are a reality.

Protecting the Immigrants -Karina Enriquez

Summary:
In this time at the moment there have been many immigration situations in which have been getting out of hand, people are doing what they can do to help . People like the pastor Ada Valiente and help from rev. Zachary Hoover want to help those families who don't have anything remotely bad but creating a life in the United States following the idea of the "American Dream" which began back during the great migration. Along with the home Hoover is providing due to him wanting to help people just as people helped him and the rest of the Jews to seek a sanctuary during World War II, we have the faith pastor Valiente is providing to help guidance those in need. This home will be helping two to three families who are being threatened by ICE or are fearing them. The home will serve as a sanctuary so that those families will feel protected and in a safe environment. People like Hoover and Valiente are slowly coming to a notice wanting to act upon what they believe in defense for those who don't really have any criminal records or anything bad holding them up just the fact that they came here to the United States because they are aware of the immense amount of opportunities there are here and a possibility for a better life not only for them but for a family .

Analysis:
This article was written by Kyung Lah,Alberto Moya, and Mallory Simon for the news network CNN. I had heard of people doing things like this in order to help those in deep need of protection from ICE. The authors seem to have added a little bit of opinions supporting the idea of helping the immigrants. This is not the first time in history in which activist or regular people have been wanting to help immigrants. Jane Addams helped create a safe settlement for immigrants called the Hull House, which in a way was very similar to what Hoover and Valiente are working on today . As we can see people will always be fighting for what they believe in and immigration has been topic that has been spoken about as early as 1889 in the creation of Hull House.

Matthew Zapata - The Oscars

The Oscars. The award show that everybody in the film industry looks forward to. The night of turning points and memories. Last night, audiences from all over the world tuned in to see the show but little did they know it would end in a shocking mix up. The oscars were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who did a fantastic job keeping the show lively and energetic. The night was filled with memorable wins and losses but the most memorable event of the night happened during the last minutes of the show. The biggest award of the night (best picture) was being presented by Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway. Having a little trouble saying who the winner was, they finally announced that La La Land had won the award. The La La Land team came up to the stage, speeches were made, Thank yous were given and then something happened. While people gave their speeches you could see a lot of commotion in the background and then it was soon announced by the producer of La La Land that they didn't win and it was intact Moonlight! Personally I was speechless not just because I'm a huge La La Land fan but because of the situation itself. Who knew such a big mistake would be taken on the stage of one of the most prestigious award shows ever. Although I'm upset La La Land didn't win I'm glad the award went to Moonlight out of all of the other nominees. The oscars, besides the huge mix up at the end, was a night filled with iconic achievements for individuals, especially marginalized people, which made the night even more memorable.

Larissa Perez #1: It was 'Moonlight,' not 'La La Land'

Summary: Barry Jenkins wasn't the only one who was "speechless" after the movie "Moonlight" was announced as the winner of best best picture. This went down in unprecedented moment in Oscars history. After "La La Land' was mistakenly announced as best picture at the Academy Awards they went and said "Moonlight" actually won. However in reality "La La Land" who should've gotten the best picture. When Bonnie and Clyde presented the nominees for best picture, everything was going as panned until the announcement. When Bonnie was about to announce he was very confused because he kept looking towards Clyde. As soon they realized they didn't and figured it out it was a mistake Jordan Horowitz quickly stopped all speeches and announced that "Moonlight," had actually won and not them. In the end the cast of "La La Land" was confused but proud to give up their Oscar.

Analysis: This article was published by CNN on February 22 and was written by Sandra Gonzalez. I think that this event was very shocking but in the end it very cool to see how happy and supportive of each other.

Chance the Rapper Says He's Rented Entire Theater for Free Screening of Jordan Peele's "Get Out", Hayley Cagle

Summary: Chance the Rapper loved Jordan Peele's "Get Out" so much that he purchased tickets for a whole day to give everyone an opportunity to go see it.
Analysis: I think this is really important. When celebrities not only have good character but good morals and social awareness, it shows us that being a good person is more important than our social status. Get Out was an especially great movie to give people the opportunity to see because it talks about real stuff. And in the rawest form. And is thought provoking. We need to do things we haven't done before and talk about the "taboos" in order to see change.

Because Uncontrollable Primary Sex Characteristics Hold More Importance Than The Wellbeing Of Actual Human Beings - Cal Thompson, 1st Period

Obama, to a mixed response, previously released guidelines requiring public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom most aligning with their gender identity. These guidelines, after being essentially put on pause due to conservative concerns, were tossed out by Trump recently. The article gives a refresher on what it means to be transgender, providing conservative concerns as well as an onslaught of accounts from actual trans people.

This article, while providing a somewhat limited definition of what it means to be transgender (neglecting to mention the existence of nonbinary individuals), gives a visibly liberal account of responses to restrictions on which bathrooms transgender individuals are allowed to use.

As a transgender person, I would like to say that going to the bathroom is extremely stressful. In the women's room I receive glares or long stares, and in the men's room I run the risk of being physically or verbally assaulted. Nongendered restrooms are an ellusive haven.

Conservatives tend to argue that letting trans people pee in peace will allow predators to pretend to be trans so as to assault women- but couldn't they do that anyway? And should trans women really be forced to use the men's room, where they are often assaulted physically, sexually, and verbally?

On a lighter note, I look forward to the attention that Trump's move will bring to transgender rights. Sometimes we have to step back so that we have more room to leap forward. But that doesn't make this a good thing.

Skyler Tepedino - It was "Moonlight," not "La La Land"

Summary:

Director Barry Jenkins wasn't the only one "speechless" after the movie "Moonlight" was announced as the winner of the best picture on Sunday night, following a unpredicted event in Oscars history. Emma Stone says it was one of the craziest Oscars she has ever been too, she says "we made history tonight." But what left everybody was that "Moonlight," was announced as best movie... when in reality it was actually "La La Land." Bonnie and Clyde presented the nominee for best picture and everything was going as planed until Bonnie's big announcement arrived. He looked very confused because he kept looking up and towards Clyde seeing if she knew what was going on, and then looked at Emma Stone and said that "La La Land," won according to CNN. "La La Land," producer Jordan Horowitz finally figured out that it was a mistake and he quickly stopped all the speeches and announced that "Moonlight," had actually won and not them. All the the "La La Land," cast was very confused but were very glad and proud to give up their Oscar.

Analysis:

I think that overall this article was eye opening literally to all the announcers and future ones. This specific event is related back to when Steve Harvey messed up the Miss Universe. He announced the wrong country when he was supposed to announce the Philippines. Also when the other cast members found out that "Moonlight," actually won they were all so supportive and happy for each other. It's really nice to see all these diverse people come together and celebrate their victories together.

Isabella Bruner -SpaceX to fly 2 paying customers to the moon next year

Summary: Space founder Elon Musk, id planning a private space mission to transport two passengers around the moon.  It would be launched from the historic Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. Muck says the flight would be on an autonomous spacecraft that needs no specially trained astronauts on board. The International Space Station was surprised, but says it will help the competition against NASA. Musk said that the weeklong mission around the moon would involve a trip of 300,000 to 400,000 miles. " the two passengers have already paid a significant deposit to do a moon mission, Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hops and dreams of all human kind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration."

Analysis: This article written by Dave Berman at February, 27,2017  at 5:03 p.m. talks about the exciting adventure two people are going to have. I would just kill to go into space, it just intrigues me and I would just dedicate my life to one day in space. The article didn't specify who the two passengers where, but I bet we will all feel jealous because they also didn't have to have years of learning and studying. This article also shows that increased advancements of our technology as humans. We have come so far and now we are starting to have passengers in space crafts? Even though in our generation, the syfy movies may just be a dream too far away, but maybe in our future generations it will become a reality. This connects to similar space craft launches like  voyager !, Pioneer 10, Explorer, and Curiosity.

Audrey Gavitt- Trump makes the Oscars about him

Summary- On Sunday February 26 the 89th annual Academy Awards were held in holly wood to honor the greatest movies of this year. There were so many great nominees as the big hit LaLa land staring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Moonlight the story of a young black man growing up in Miami, Arrival, Hidden Figures, Fences and many other amazing films. But the talk the next day was not about who wore it best it was about who won it? At the end of the night the last award to be given out was for best picture, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were presenting the award and when he opened the envelope he seemed to be a little confused but then she went on and named LaLa land best picture. All was well they went up to accept the award said a speech then something out of there ordinary happened, there was a mistake! They had announced the wrong winner because they had the wrong envelope and in fact moonlight had won, they handled it very professionally and handed the award over to the rightful owners. Starting at the beginning night the host of the evening Jimmy Kimmel took many stabs at Trump and didn't stop the rest of the night, he even tweeted at the president on a large projector in front of everyone. There were also many politically based speeches speaking about immigration and discrimination, the winner for best foreign film was not able to make it due to the travel ban he was stuck in Iran. The next day trump said "They were focused so hard on politics that they didn't get the act together at the end," implying that the envelope mixup was because they were too focused on politics.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/27/politics/donald-trump-oscars-blunder-hollywood-politics/index.html

Analysis- I watched the Oscars last night and after the announced LaLa land the winner I didn't stay for the speech and i went to bed a few minuets later I came back out and I was confused and shocked by outcome. I didn't except it to happen I hadn't seen any of the nominated movies so I couldn't judge who should have won or not. This was the first time in Oscar history a mistake like this has ever happened. When Trump started complaining about how they made fun of him it didn't come as a surprise but the important thing to remember is that it is important that all these celebrities are political. People who are seen in the media and looked up to need to show that you can have a voice and you should stand up for what you believe in. Weather it be by making people laugh while doing it or standing with your country to demonstrate something important. These people have a very important role in our society, people partially worship them thats why it is so powerful that they are bringing attention and importance to these issues.  I hope they won't be silenced so more people can join them.

Crash- Harper Jones

Summary: A plane crashed into two homes on Monday in Riverside, California. It is still unknown if anyone was killed or injured. The plane had departed from Riverside to go to San Jose. The crash happened around 4:41 p.m. Homes were evacuated.

Analysis: Honestly, I am praying for the families of the neighborhood. As a reaction to this, we should have a law or something that has the planes checked before liftoff (I don't know if there is one or not.).

Jordyn Chapman- America First Puts Freedom and Leadership Last

Summary: In his joint address to Congress, President Donald Trump began to elaborate his vision of an "America First" foreign policy. He basically implied the idea of US self interest, alienating the world only rendering it more threatening. The most quoted foreign policy statement in the President's speech was: "My job is not to represent the world. My job is to represent the United States of America." Trump's hands-off approach to people contrasts sharply with John F. Kennedy's appeal in his inaugural address: "To those peoples in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required -- not because the communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich."

Analysis: This article was created by Suzanne Nossel, who works as the executive director of PEN American Center, with a versatile career in government service and roles in corporate and non-profit sectors. I haven't kept up much with Trump's plans for the country either than the new implications of health care. This article shines a light on our newest foreign policy idea which could be potentially dangerous if not taken seriously enough. Though the article had a strong opinion throughout most of the article, reflecting a more negative connotation, Suzanne really emphasized the awareness we need to have.

Synthesis- This article relates to the various affairs with foreign policy, starting with George Washington's farewell address that (attempted) working with the idea of complete neutrality.

Townley Jordan- "Moonlight" Makes Oscars History as First LGBTQ Best Picture Winner

Summary: "Moonlight" became the first LGBTQ movie to win the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. LGBTQ films have been nominated for Best Picture before, but none won the LGBTQ award, and many had gay or transgender roles played by straight actors. "It has often been noted that playing queer characters, especially queer characters who die, is one of the best ways to get a Best Actor statue," said LGBTQ film historian Jenni Olson. Not only does Moonlight have a positive ending, the film breaks barriers by showing the largely autobiographical story of a living, black, gay man told in his own words. Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose script "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" was the base of the film, took an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. McCraney did not want the movie to be stuck into one box, saying, "Whether or not it does it a disservice, it's more about what the truth of it is. It is a queer story, it is a gay story, it is a poverty story — you know what I mean? It is a story about drug addiction."
The Oscars seem to be working towards being more inclusive, this year a record-breaking five deserving black people won Oscars. Only three awards have ever been given to black people simultaneously before, in 2010 and 2014.

Analysis: This article was written following the Oscars last night. I think it is so great that Moonlight won the award for best picture because it means that even if it is smaller in comparison to the problems minorities are currently facing, it is still a step forward, and it is still a victory. It is also an improvement for the Academy Awards because it seems that they are becoming more accepting. I think it is an especially great accomplishment because in order for the movie to win this award, it related to its audiences. It means that people were able to empathize with the hardships of life for the people of the LGBTQ community even if they themselves were not members of this community. This is such good news because it means progress has been made in the right direction.

Emily McDougal - Mom Selflessly Carries Baby Without Brain

Summary: Keri Young was informed at a 19-week ultrasound that the baby she was pregnant with did not have a brain, which meant the baby would die very shortly after it was born. However, the mother immediately made the selfless decision to continue carrying the baby so that it's organs could be donated once it was born. Young knew that her baby would have a life, albeit a short one, and couldn't bear to terminate the life of her child, especially if it meant being able to possibly save another life in the process. The baby is due May 7.

Analysis: This article was written on Thursday, February 23, 2017, by Ali Larkin, to inform the audience about the amazing Young family. I am blown away by the decision this mom had to make. She chose to carry her child, go through all the highs and lows of pregnancy, just to have to come home without a baby. Her decision was so purely selfless and kind, which is such a contrast to all of the hatred and violence we've been seeing in our world. It's so wonderful to see an incredible situation unfold, and witness the lives it will touch in the future.

Synthesis: There are so many people who have donated organs to other people in their lives, even to strangers in completely selfless acts. Since 1988, 1,509 people have donated one of their organs to someone they did not know.

Trump to propose 10 percent spike in defense spending, major cuts to other agencies
Joshua Klein
 https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/trump-to-propose-10-percent-spike-in-defense-spending-massive-cuts-to-other-agencies/2017/02/27/867f9690-fcf2-11e6-99b4-9e613afeb09f_story.html?utm_term=.9465365d3602

This article is about President Trump's plans on financial spending. He proposes to cut government spendings on agencies and increase the defense budget, including police, and border patrol. In total the defense budget spendings would increase by a whopping 10%. White House officials declined discussion on the specificities of the plan when asked. Trump said that his plan will propose historic increases in spending to bolster the country’s depleted military.

I personally think that it is an absolutely terrible idea. Why does America need to increase its army if it is already regarded as the most sophisticated and most powerful in the world. In addition Donald Trump is willing to cut spendings on important agencies such as the EPA to carry out his plan. I think that is a huge mistake, and could easily have catastrophic results.

Kobe Williams (1st Period) - Obama for President...of France??

Recently, many French citizens organized Obama17, a guerrilla campaign trying to get former U.S. president, Barack Obama, to run for president of France. They have already created a website and put up about 500 posters throughout Paris. Their goal is to ultimately get 1 million to sign a petition for Obama to run. Even through all of this work and effort, the organizers state that this is overall a joke, but one with a serious purpose.

After reading that their true purpose of this campaign is just to show that the citizens are fed up with the politics within their country, I started to better understand their reasoning. They even state how, "It's totally crazy, but the cool thing is that once you get past that, you start thinking that maybe it's possible." And nothing more supports that statement than politics in our day and age. Overall, some people may think that this is a great idea; however, others might think it's just a waste of time and effort. In my opinion, I think we should just wait and see how Barack Obama responds to this.

Jada Brown-Former Google Engineer Blasts Company's HR Practices After Sexual Harassment Revelation

Summary:
Earlier today, Recode reported that Uber had asked its new SVP of engineering, Amit Singhal to resign after he failed to disclose the circumstances involved in his departure from Google.

Analysis:
Earlier today, Recode reported that Uber had asked its new SVP of engineering, Amit Singhal to resign after he failed to disclose the circumstances involved in his departure from Google. According to Recode, Singhal resigned from Google in early 2016 after an investigation into a sexual harassment claim brought against him by another employee. Singhal has denied the allegations, but according to Recode, Google found them “credible.”Obviously, this situation looks bad for Uber. The company has had a disastous 2017, and losing a high-profile hire over an undisclosed sexual harassment allegation doesn’t help, especially since Uber has already been under fire for issues involving sexual harassment. Earlier this month, former Uber engineer went crazy in a blog post that went viral. In response to Fowler’s allegations, Uber has opened up an independent investigation headed-up by former Attorney General Eric Holder.
But for Google, the situation doesn’t look much better. According to Recode, even though Google found the claims against Singhal “credible,” he was allowed to leave quietly, basically on his own terms. Google even threw him a goodbye party.

Anna Czyzewski - Public Schools Protect Undocumented Students

Summary: As Trump's deportation of undocumented immigrants begins to take place, fear is (unsurprisingly) sweeping across the country. To combat worries, many school districts with a high percentage of undocumented students have made resolutions to protect them. Steps they have taken include banning ICE units from coming inside the school, unless they have the very rare criminal warrant. Protocol has been written for the sole purpose of keeping a safe environment for students and protecting them from interruptions. In addition, all these school vow to not give out any private information about their students, barring ICE units from other opportunities.

Analysis: I'm extremely glad that some school districts are doing this, and I hope more will follow their example. It makes me happy that these districts actually care for their students, even if they mask it with the purpose of limiting interruptions in the classroom. The state government and local governments have their own power, which they have used previously in contrast to the federal government in a few instances. Proving the need of the state governments and the disconnection between federal and state.

Moonlight surprise best picture?-Josie Guthrey

On Sunday night, the oscars were live on television, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. When the last award was being announced, best picture, everyone was looking forward to the surprise. The announcers read the card and said La La Land won mistakenly! Minutes later, many workers came on stage announcing that it was a mistake and that Moonlight had officially won, showing the card to the cameras.

Apparently, the announcers had grabbed the wrong card, it reading "Emma Stone for La La Land" They apologized on live tv. But overall, congratulations Moonlight! You deserved it!

It has been discovered by Troy Hunt, a security researcher, that CloudPets toys have been hacked. CloudPets toys allow people to send messages, via an app, that are then spoken by the toy. However, it was recently discovered that these messages were saved to an unsecured server that was hacked. The hacker deleted all the data and left a ransom message. CloudPets likely has restored the data, but the hacker had access to personal information and passwords. CloudPets also violated California law by not notifying consumers about the hack.

This is another sad example of companies not doing their due diligence to their customers. I hope they face legal prosecution for not protecting, and then notifying, their customers. People should always be vigilant and practice good internet safety. This hack is not dissimilar to the De Lome Letter, that was intercepted and revealed unflattering remarks that the Spanish minister in Washington said about President Mckinley.

Izzy Brown- Protections pulled from trans school restrooms

Summary: Donald Trump is trying to work to reverse Obama's guidelines on transgender student's bathroom rights. This has caused anger in families of transgender students and civil rights groups. There were lawmakers even before Trump who tried to push this. Just last month the Senate Bill 6 was filed in Texas which would remove transgendered students the right to use the bathroom of their identity. This bill only applies to public schools and government funded buildings. Many parents have said that this very prejudicial towards their children.

Analysis: This has been an issue for a long time and will probably be a long fight. These trans youth are still trying to figure themselves because they are still young and growing. Taking away something as trivial as what bathroom they cane use is absurd. In fact most people don't care what bathroom trans people use, it's just the narrow-minded people that cause an uproar about this.

Gracie Darlington: Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia vandalized

Around 100 tombstones were damaged and overturned at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia this Saturday. Less than a week ago, a similar act of vandalism took place at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis. Members of the Muslim communities of Philadelphia have reached out to their Jewish neighbors, encouraging unity and raising funds to repair the cemetery. In addition, dozens of bomb threats have been made this year to the Jewish centers in the US and Canada.
This article was written to describe another act of hate and intolerance in the US. This wave of antisemitism has urged citizens to reach out to politicians, including the president, and compel them to rise to action. This article's audience is spread throughout the nation, and by educating them, it has a positive effect on its readers.
Antisemitism has been prevalent in the US for generations, but this article can specifically relate to the anti-Jewish sentiments and acts of the KKK during the 1920s.

The Underground Network for Immigrants- Abby Pryor 8th period

Summary:
All kinds of people are preparing their homes to host multiple families of undocumented immigrants across the United States. Families that are scared of the ICE raiding their homes or being deported are now able to stay in the homes of these kind American citizens. Religious leaders in all types of faith are providing this service because of President Trump's election. There will be many places for these families to stay throughout California. People hosting these families are still scared of the ICE coming to their door, but to be able to come in, they would still need a warrant. This service is beyond any type of religious belief, and aids immigrant families in need.

Analysis:
I think that it's sad that families in our country are so terrified of being deported, and put into a worse situation, that they have to seek help from others and live in their homes. It is so kind of the hosts to help those families in need and I hope that everyone stays safe.

Whomst, and other infuriating realizations.

Recently in the cesspool that is the social media explore page, I've come across a new brand of meme, in which the word 'who' is used, and replaced with 'whom' (incorrectly most of the time, might I add). 'whom' is replaced with "whomst", "whomst" with "whomst'd", and so on and so on, until you are presented with the ungodly mass of letters that is, "whomst'd've'ly'yaint'nt'ed'ies's'y'es". Imagine spellcheck just killing itself over trying to figure out even the smallest portion of that keyboard smash party residue from hell! And the worst part of all is that I find this hilarious! I don't mean to sound pretentious at all, but I did not grow up on Mel Brooks, Norman Lear, nine years of private education, and french wines to crack up at the word "whomst"!
I'm better than "whomst"!
I'm smarter than "whomst"!
"whomst" is worse than story time youtubers, hermits from the depths of tumblr, and Kevin James all blended together in Satan's Blender Of Pain! And it makes me giggle!
I will not stand for this! It's awful! It's repulsive! It's infuriating! It's not funny!... WHOMST!

Long story short, my sense of humor it killing itself, and I'm forced to watch, as I giggle as "whomst"

P.S.
No, this wasn't based on an article, if you're wondering. Although that should've been obvious from the title.

Mikenzie Moon, "This Indiana plant really is shipping its jobs to Mexico"

Summary: This is the story of John Felter a father and husband who lost a good paying job in the 2008 crash. His family lost everything their house and cars things were at their worst. He took a job three years ago from Rexnord a job that was paying less and treated workers bad. Now Rexnord is moving to Mexico and 300 people will lose their jobs, with a difficult chance of finding another, especially being middle age men. John Felter allowed himself to hope Donald Trump would save his job like he promised. How there are people from Mexico who will be taking their jobs shadowing them and learning the skills. Many workers are selling out by teaching them tricks and steps to get a greater pension from the company. Feltner is against this because his own union people are helping the company take away his livelihood. Now his collage age kids have to give up their dreams.

Analysis/synthesis: I didn't know this was happening in our country and its really sad and heartbreaking that companies are doing this and ruining peoples lives. The video and personal story really showed what this was like and the reality of it all. Its sad that these companies are taking away jobs from people who have been doing them since high school and can't find another job and taking them to Mexico where people will be payed $3 an hour. This is very similar to the industrial revolution when immigrants would come to America and take the jobs for the smallest amount just to have food. This isn't the immigrants or people in Mexico taking these jobs its the corruption of companies doing this because they know they can make a greater profit.

Seanelle Higgins: Sexual Assault at Nursing Homes

Summary: Many of the inhabitants of nursing homes are unable to speak or function on their own,  but instead of being then care of, they are being sexually assaulted. The article states that there is no possible way to know how many victims there are because these cases are largely unreported. Surprisingly, the nursing homes are doing hardly anything to stop these incidents from happening,  neither are government officials. Nursing homes are extremely slow with reporting and reluctant to believe the accusations.  The families and the victims are failed at every turn.

Analysis: I think this is a horrifying story and really,  really sad. These old people are innocent victims who are targeted because of their vulnerability.  They are more prone to speech problems and memory loss,  so accounting a consistent story over and over by memory is a difficult task,  one that is crucial in the justice system when it comes to rape charges. I hope that this article brings attention to these poor people.  They deserve to have their stories told and their attackers put away for a very long time.

Seanelle Higgins: Cincinnati Club Shooting

Summary: Two men are facing mirder charges in Cincinnati after a shooing in a night club. Police there have already made an arrest for Cornell Davis, 27, and have yet to arrest the other shooter. They also expect that other people may be involved in the incident, but for now they are focusing on adding charges to the two suspects as the investigation increases. The incident began with a simple altercation, but progressed into a fight in which both suspects pulled out their weapons and fired at one another. One person has unfortunately passed away and 16 were left severely injured. Only 16 casings were discovered, but police suspect that more shots were fired due to the number of people injured or dead.

Analysis: I think that this is a terrible incident that could have been prevented. This is a clear reminder for America that we have a serious gun control issue. If these individuals did not have guns, the altercation could have ended with a simple bar fight and they would have only injured each other, rather than innocent people. People are responsible for their own actions and how they handle guns, but it becomes an issue when bystanders are brought into the mix, simply because a dangerous weapon became involved. I hope this is the last incident that we see like this for a long time. I cannot speak for out current presidential administration,  I sincerely hope our next one will be a strong advocate for gun control and gun violence prevention.

Maggie Gibson SpaceX to Fly Passengers On Private Trip Around Moon in 2018

In 2018, the private spacecraft company, Space X, announced it will be flying two private citizens around the moon. The two paying passengers will be aboard the Dragon spacecraft, being sent into space using the company's own Falcon Heavy rocket. The private citizens approached Space X about the mission, and have already put down a deposit for the mission. The names of the individuals will be released upon the confirmation of their health in order to complete the mission.

The author's purpose in writing this article was to inform the reader of the ability of going into space without being an astronaut. This is significant, considering space is now more open for anyone to go visit - or at least anyone who has the money. But it's amazing that technology has progressed thus far to be able to create the technology cheap enough for two people to be able to go. Though I do worry about the environmental impact if everybody just takes off to space, I think it's overall a big step forward. Synthesis: neil armstrong to be the first man walking on the moon.

White House blocks news organizations from attending press briefing - Ethan Lacey

The New York Times, CNN, LA Times, Politico, Buzzfeed, BBC, were one of the many news organizations blocked from an off camera press briefing in the White House. When reporters attempted to go in the briefing, they were told that they were not on the list of attendees. NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox News were one of the few hand-picked organizations allowed in on Thursday morning. Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the White House "had the pool there so everyone would be represented and get an update from us today." Time Magazine, The Associated Press, and US Today all boycotted the meeting in response in to how the situation was handled. The White House Correspondents Association also protested the move by the Trump administration.

I believe this type of move from the Trump administration should be very scary to the American public. The administration is filtering what news outlets give the news to the American people and ultimately are filtering what the public knows and doesn't know about what is happening in the White House. This act should be reviewed for violation of the first amendment, and should not be accepted by the American public. This form of censorship is unheard of and is the first step into a dictatorship, which is everything against the freedom and democracy that America is known for. This can be connected to the Office of Censorship that was active during WWII to censor what the public knew and didn't know during the war.

Anecia Forbes: Mardi Gras parade: 3 critically hurt as SUV hits band

SUMMARY: Twelve Alabama students were injured Tuesday when a Ford Expedition taking part in a Mardi Gras parade plowed into a marching band ahead of it, officials said. Three students are in critical condition but stable, Gulf Shores city spokesman Grant Brown said. The victims' ages range from 12 to 17. Brown said a 73-year-old man was driving the SUV, which accelerated before it hit the Gulf Shores High School marching band. It was not immediately clear why the driver accelerated, but authorities do not believe the crash was intentional. "Every indication is that it was a tragic accident," police Chief Ed Delmore said. Six of those injured are middle school students; six are high school students, Baldwin County Public Schools said in a statement. As the children were treated and rushed to ambulances, dented musical instruments and debris were scattered on the street. Earlier authorities said four people were in critical condition. One of the students was released from the hospital, the school system said Tuesday afternoon on its Facebook page. Brown said there were no signs that drugs or alcohol were involved. Delmore told reporters at a second news conference that the driver had given blood samples voluntarily. The chief said there is at least one video showing the accident, and police also hope to retrieve information about the vehicle's speed and movement from an computer on the SUV. Several emergency agencies scrambled to the coastal community to help with what fire Battalion Chief Kevin Tolbert called a "mass trauma incident." Tolbert said the SUV ended up on top of some of the children. A crisis counselor was at a local high school to comfort students and parents who witnessed the crash, said Angie Swiger, a member of the Baldwin County Board of Education. "It's going to be a very difficult day," she said. "It is a tight-knit community. We just ask for everyone's thoughts and prayers." The vehicle was representing the Military Officers Association of America. The organization said it was still learning the facts. "We're concerned about those who have been injured and our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families as they deal with this unfortunate mishap," the organization said. Brown said the band was at the head of the parade and the SUV was behind the 100 or so members. The band marched onto a highway to begin the parade and the truck followed. "And then something went terribly wrong," Brown said.

ANAYLSIS: This article is written by CNN News. This is a very tragic thing to happen especially on such a fun and festive day. I hope everyone that got injured and effected by this incident will stay strong as they recover. It puzzles me HOW the vehicle lost control and ended up doing what it did. They really need to figure what went on if it was the vehicle so this incident can be prevented or the driver. This can be synthesized to when Felix the Cat caught on fire after tangling with telephone wires along the route in Macy's Thanksgiving Parade November 24 1927 (Felix became the first balloon fatality in the popular event).

Emily Anderson- the impact of space

In today's CNN 10 news clip, they covered the story of NASA's twin study. NASA wanted to study the effects of longterm space travel, and in order to do this, they brought in a set of identical twins, Mark and Scott. They studied the twins thoroughly before sending one of them into space for a year. They continued to study the two bodies during and after Scott's space travel. They found out that Scott's chromosomes actually lengthened which brought him back to earth being 2 inches taller. This could've been due to the increase in exercise he did up in space and the reduced calorie intake. On the other hand, while on earth, Mark's chromosomes actually shrunk. However, Scott came back with a small decrease in his cognitive abilities overall.
I think this study was very interesting because we don't really know what space is capable of on our physical bodies. This is great for the advancement of traveling farther out into space. In order for humans to reach farther planets, they must travel in space for a long time. In order for that to happen, we must know the long term effects. This can relate to the constant race in the past century for countries to explore space. They are constantly competing to be the first to go the furthest. Just like they were able to put the first man on the moon, the U.S. could be the first to travel farther out into space.

Lilly Anthony- US public schools take steps to protect undocumented students

Summary: Public schools in Chicago have began to deny any federal immigrant agents access to their schools without a warrant. Also districts in Pennsylvania and California have stepped up to help with immigrants who fear of an further process Trump might make in using immigration officers at borders. The chicago public schools have set up guidelines to help with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After the arrest of 700 immigrants, DHS memos hope to explain what Trump’s plans are. Schools showed that attendance for students had decreased, and they hope to make school a safe place, or home for students. Many other U.S schools have also pledged to protect any undocumented immigrants.

Analysis: The topic of what Trump is planning to do for immigrants is a common thing mentioned in other articles along with this one. This article specifically focuses on the concerns of undocumented students and how this affects their schools. It’s important for those who haven’t been affected by this to realize how many millions of people this impacts in our country. In U.S history, The Chinese Exclusion Act is an example of how immigrants were limited in entering the U.S. during this time along with a rise of nativist sentiments in the U.S.

Fewer kids are attempting suicide. We may have same-sex marriage to thank for it. Zia Bella Blair

Legalizing same-sex marriage in the U.S. may have literally saved American lives. In a new study published in JAMA Pediatrics, researchers at Harvard and John Hopkins universities examined the rate of youth suicide attempts in states before and after same-sex marriage laws. They found legalizing same-sex marriage was associated with a marked decrease in youth suicide attempts. Before same-sex marriage was legalized, 8.6% of high school students in the study reported a suicide attempt. After, the overall rate dropped by 0.6 percentage point — a 7% decrease. The effect was even higher in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning youth, who saw a 14% decrease. The researchers analyzed Centers for Disease Control & Prevention data from over 750,000 self-reported surveys covering a 16-year period between 1999 and 2015, when the Supreme Court legalized marriage in all 50 states. Whether an individual identified as trans was not included in this analysis. The decrease in suicide attempts was concentrated around the time each state legalized same-sex marriage before the nationwide ruling.Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in young people. LGBTQ youth are especially at risk. It is the second-leading cause of death in people ages 10-24 years, according to the CDC.  Lesbian, gay, and bi youth are four times more likely to have a suicide attempt, according to the study. Trans youth may be at even greater risk.  As to why the numbers dropped, it's possible that legalization communicated to young people that they really are equal. That's what study leader Julia Raifman told PBS NewsHour. While the study wasn't designed to get into the nitty-gritty of individual psychologies, we know social stigma can play a big role in a person's mental health. Anti-marriage laws may have represented a kind of structural, state-sponsored stigma in young people's minds. By legalizing same-sex marriage, the states may have effectively removed that stigma. Today, though some advocates fear for LGBTQ rights under the new administration, same-sex marriage is the law of the land. The Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in all states back in 2015. President Trump has promised to uphold this ruling and other LBGTQ rights, but some advocates are still worried about what the new administration and a GOP-controlled Congress will mean. Nevertheless, no matter what happens, the numbers are hard to argue with. It really does look like this saves lives. In fact, the authors estimated that same-sex marriage will mean 134,000 fewer suicide attempts per year. “Regardless of political views, I think everyone can agree that reducing adolescent suicide attempts is a good thing,” Raifman said. I am honestly not at all surprised, letting teens believe that they can have a future with whoever they love is very positive.

Qiaunci Jones- Religious Tolerance.

Ivanka Trump’s attempt at using Twitter to promote religious tolerance backfired Monday night. President Donald Trump’s daughter tweeted that “America is a nation built on the principle of religious tolerance” and urged people to “protect our houses of worship and religious centers.” Her well-intentioned post came following a wave of bomb hoaxes against Jewish Community Centers across the country. Trump herself converted to Judaism before marrying Jared Kushner. But the tweet, which she ended with the hashtag #JCC, wasn’t well received.

I have no clue if she was intending to be sweet or save face. I agree with her message but I could see why there's so controversy. I just don't think that she has to suffer because of her Father's actions. This can relate to controversy over religious tolerance during early times.

Academy Awards on stage blunder- Camryn Stafford

summary:
In announcing the winner of best picture last night at the 2017 oscars, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beaty read the wrong recipient, La La Land. When reading Beaty began to introduce the winner but created suspense when he paused and looked at both Dunaway and inside the envelope. Assuming that Beaty was purposely trying to difficult for comedic purposes, Dunaway snatched the card and announced La La Land as the winner. As many people began to say their speeches, they were soon interrupted by a man from the backstage crew who informed them that there had been a mistake. Maturely enough, producers Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt announced that moonlight was instead the winner of the prestigious award.

analysis:
A mistake of this sort has never happened at the academy awards before so it came as a shock at all. The author is not biased by any means and is simply explaining the actions of the oscars without bashing them or La La Land. The main idea of the article is to explain the incident that happened at the awards, while the significance is showing that one of the most prestigious groups has made a mistake that is not common. This mistake can be synthesized to yellow-journalism when false information is publicized.

Underground network readies homes to help undocumented immigrants
Reverend Hoover has created a network called Rapid Response to shelter Undocumented Immigrants. He worries that I.C.E. will come knocking on his door at any moment to take the immigrants he hide in his home. He knows that there is such thing as the 4th amendment that allows him the right to secure people in his home. But he does tell CNN that he will not let them in unless they have a warrant. He also says that it is scary and he does not know what he would do if they did come with a warrant. It isnt just Hoover that is securing undocumented immigrants in his home either there is a whole network working to help out these immigrants. They are doing this to protect the immigrants from Trumps new executive order.
I think that this is a great thing that this network is doing because these people need to be helped and they should not be thrown out of a country that they came to for a better life just to go back wheere they came from. I also believe that it is a terrible thing that the Trump is doing with this new executive order because it is splitting families apart from each other and I just do not understand how you could live with knowing that you are separating innocent people from their families for no reason
I can synthesis this with the underground rairoad from back when slavery was a thing. People up north would help slaves escape the chains of the South and it could have lead to the people who were helping out the other people to get in trouble. Also I can synthesis this too during Worl War II when people would hide the Jewish poeple in their homes so that way they did not have to go to concentration camps and they risked their lives. Although this would not lead to the death of these networkers but it could lead to trouble.

liza kaye: sick, dying, and raped in nursing homes

http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/02/health/nursing-home-sex-abuse-investigation/?iid=ob_homepage_deskrecommended_pool

An abundance of seniors in American nursing homes have been raped and sexually abused. The people that they are paying to take care of them have been doing the absolute worst things to them. Worse than that, the government isn't doing anything to stop this. Nursing homes have been taking a suspiciously slow amount of time to respond to these allegations. Most of these elderly women are over 80 years old. This often makes it hard for them to fight back, or even sometimes realize what is being done to them.

This is a terrible issue, knowing that these elderly people are so vulnerable. We have seen that often times in history, the government will just overlook somethings. In this case, there is no apparent change in government in regards to an issue being overseen.

Hannah Howell- Kansas Shooting

Summary: Srinivas Kuchibhotla was recently shot dead by Adam Purinton at a bar in Kansas. Kuchibhotla was Indian and so were his friends that were shot as well (but not killed). Witnesses reported hearing the suspect Purinton shout "Get out of my country" before shooting them. This story also made headlines in India and prompted Indian communities in the US to question the relative safety of their country. Officials are still doing research to conclude if it's an "official" hate crime.

Analysis: This is obviously a hate crime and it seems dumb that people don't want to call it what it is right off the bat. Telling someone "get out of my country" and then shooting them is a hate crime!!!! These seem to be becoming more frequent in the US and its really upsetting. The US is supposed to be a place where all men are equal and treated as such.

Isabella Poscente- Strange Death Occurs

Isabella Poscente- Strange Death Occurs

Summary:
A young man, named Terrill Thomas, died from dehydration in a Milwaukee County Jail on April 24, which was nine days after being arrested. Also, other inmates reported that they heard him begging for water. This is cruel torture, and nobody should be treated like this, even if they are in jail. They labeled the death a homicide. The water was shut off in the jail for six days. No one should ever die from dehydration, it is just sick.

Analysis/Synthesis:
The article was written by Ryan Reilly and was posted on the Huffington Post to tell the public of the problems in prisons. This might affect the meaning of the article because we are only getting it from one source. I didn’t know about this article specifically until I read it, but I have heard how some prisoners have been mistreated before and some have died in the past because of diseases, nutrition, and dehydration. This is a negative influence because a prisoner dying is very sad and horrible. The point the article is trying to convey is how we, as a society, need to change how certain prisoners are treated. I am not saying to treat them like a day at the spa, because it is prison, but they are people and people have basic human rights. This document is relevant in our lives today because we have to fix this problem of people being mistreated and leading them to dying.

Emma Sutherland - Europeans Brought New, Deadly Ulcer Bacteria to Americas

SUMMARY:
Europeans that had migrated to America introduced many germs that affected those that populated that area. Many were diagnosed with smallpox or measles, killing about 90% of the Indian population of that time. However, a new study had shown that there is another bacteria that the Europeans carried called Helicobacter pylori. According to an international team of researchers, this bacteria can cause gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. Effects of this disease can be seen today through South America.  South America, today, has some of the world's highest rates of gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. More than half of the world's population is infected with this bacteria, however, it can be treated with a regimen of antibiotics if they are diagnosed with a gastric ulcer. A reason why populations living in America today have such high rates of ulcers and stomach cancer is because it has to do "with a 'mismatch' between the ethnicity of the patient and the origin of the H. Pylori strain they carry". Researchers said that new findings regarding this may be useful for future research on the connection between those who have stomach cancer and gastric ulcers to this bacteria.

ANALYSIS:
Before reading this article, I had been aware of the diseases that Europeans brought to America in the 15th and 16th centuries. I find it very interesting that they are just now becoming aware of another disease that has affected our population all this time! I hope that they are able to find more research to be able to help those that have gastric ulcers and stomach cancers, and hopefully find some sort of pattern within them that is related to this bacteria. This article is from Yahoo, which is a reliable news source. They always keep citizens fully updated on current topics, and they cover all topics of the news. This also synthesizes to the time of the Columbian Exchange when many diseases as well as goods were transported from Europe to America. Many people died around this time because of the introduction of these diseases, and the high rate at which they infected people and spread to others.

Lauren Cargill - Pilot, 4 U.S. tourists killed in Australia plane crash

Summary: Four US citizens and a US pilot were all killed in a devastating plane crash in Melbourne, Australia. The pilot reported an engine failure moments before the plane went down. The plane crashed into a shopping mall, but luckily the mall wasn't open yet and no one on the ground was killed. The US citizens were visiting Australia on a golf trip. Authorities are working to figure out the cause of the crash. According to Sky News Australia, it is their worst aviation accident in 30 years.

Analysis: I think its so sad that these people were in Australia for a fun trip and an accident like this had to happen. My dad is actually friends with one of the people who died, so my heart is with all of the families of  the victims. I hope that they are able to figure out why the plane went down. This could compare to Helios Airways Flight 522 crash in 2005 because both are unsolved.

German man beheaded- maddie gold

A German man has been beheaded by Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippines after a deadline to pay his ransom passed. It was the second time Kantner, 70, had been abducted. He was held along with his partner, Sabine Merz, by Somali pirates for nearly two months in 2008. A video posted by the Philippines-based Islamist extremist group Abu Sayyaf and distributed by SITE Intelligence Group identifies the man as Jurgen Kantner, who has been held captive since November.

A German official said the government was still checking the video's authenticity. His decline to pay the Ransom caused it. He has been kidnapped before in those areas.

Kate Pinkerton - US public schools protect undocumented students

Summary - The Chicago Public School District sent out a letter to all principals at their schools saying not to allow immigration and customs enforcement workers into the school unless they have a warrant. This is to protect the illegal immigrants in their school and make sure they have a safe place to learn, without fear of being deported. Other school districts have similar policies regarding the ICE in place because of Donald Trumps new policies of deportation and building a wall.

Analysis - Its so sad that people who are in the US working hard trying to get an education are having to constantly worry about if they or their family members will get deported. The US claims to be the Land of the Free but because of a racist atmosphere here it really doesn't feel that free. I hope that DISD has some sort of rule like this protecting students. I have heard stories of kids in DISD whos parents have been deported and their kids have been left here homeless.

Katie Haidet - Without Water in Chile

Summary: In Santiago, Chile, water has been cut off for millions of people. Rainstorms and landslides have been the main cause. Many people are striving to stock up on as much water they can get, and many businesses and restaurants were told to stay closed. Until the water can flow more clearly, the water to the majority of the city is cut off from the Maipo river. Severe isolation was created because of the large amount of water flowing from the Andes. 1.45 million people have been affected by this. Four people have died from these floods.

Analysis: This article was published on BBC New. This article connects to a lot of problems around the world. Nobody should have to go a day without access to water. There is no way to but a stop that the situation considering it is a natural disaster. Nature is something that normally cannot be controlled, and in this case, they cannot do much more to help control the flooding. Prior to reading this article, I had not heard about this. This article reminds me of the event of the Galveston Hurricane which completely flushed out all of Galveston and lots of people lost their lives. I am hoping that the community is able to help the flooding.

Ava Noble: Millions Without Water in Chile

Summary:
In Santiago, Chile, water has been cut off for millions of people. This was caused by rainstorms and landslides. Many businesses and restaurants were told to stay closed, and many people are striving to stock up on as much water they can get. Until the water can flow more clearly, the water to the majority of the city is cut off from the Maipo river. Severe isolation was created because of the large amount of water flowing from the Andes. 1.45 million people have been affected by this. Four people have died from these floods.

Analysis:
Hearing about this made me extremely sad. Nobody should have to go a day without access to water. It is so sad that there is only so much they can do when it is a natural disaster. Nature sometimes cannot be controlled, and in this case, they cannot do much more to help control the flooding. Prior to reading this article, I had not heard about this. To synthesise, I can connect elements of this event to the Mississippi River Flood of 1993. I am hoping that city continuously works towards getting people the water and help they need.

Obama for President of France? -Kate Kahle

A french guerilla group has plastered France (Which is in the height of its election season) with these posters. ( if you cant read french, they say "yes we can" on the top)

The organizers are also dead-set on getting 1 million people to sign a petition for Obama to run for French President. It is a joke, but a poignant one in showing how fed up the french people are with their options for their next head of state, because their current president, Francois Hollande has had an administration full of both political and personal scandal, and none of the other options seem much better (sound familiar?). The frontrunner, Marianne LePen is the president of Le Front Nationelle, a far right group founded by her father, seems like a truly abysmal option to the young french voters, who are mainly far leftists. It is unclear whether or not Obama is aware of the protest.

I think that France is now facing the same difficult decision that the United States was facing a few short months ago. I think the outcome of the french election is nearly impossible to predict at this point. This new wave of social activism through things that are simply outrageous is entertaining, but I don't know that it is any more effective than traditional protests and petitions of the past.
