Linnea Soderlund: "Sweat" The Broadway Play About It All

Summary: The New York Times reported that a new play by Lynn Nottage will be hitting broadway at the New York Public Theatre until December 18. This piece touches on many issues that were brought up during the recent election cycle such as unemployment, immigration, and other social issues. The show is actually set in the early 2000's, but holds a remarkable resemblance to the state of our political and social picture right now.

Analysis: In the theatre, we think it very important to address the issues we see and harbor strong opinions on. I think it's wonderful that Nottage was able to take in everything that has been going on in or country, somewhat unnoticed, and turn it into art for everyone to witness and understand. I think it's crucial to have your voice heard, and I admire her success in doing so.

Synthesis: Entertainment has long been a laundry hamper for ideas, opinions, and feelings regarding the political and social climate around us. A fantastic example of this crossover between art and politics is the Reagan presidency. Ronald Reagan had been a household name before he stepped foot in the oval office. I think that in the end, art and the "real world" are truly indistinguishable.

  1. This is so cool! I feel like Broadway has a reputation for being all about love songs and happy endings, so I'm glad we're getting some content that could defy that expectation and will speak on real issues Americans are facing.
