Linnea Soderlund: Man staged fake standoff as proposal

Summary: CNN reports that in Mobile, Alabama, a man named Daiwon McPherson took an opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, while making a statement. He set up a false police standoff to frighten his girlfriend, and then, while being aimed at by inactive tasers, he went on one knee and popped the question.

Analysis: I think this was a great statement about the BLM movement and really goes to show how we have become so used to the systematic racism involved with the police-community relationship, that, especially in the South, we are conditioned to jump to conclusions, and we assume that he would've been shot. I love how he intertwined something something so big and real in with something happy and personal.

Synthesis: This situation reminds me of the 2000's craze of the flash mob. People would just start dancing in the middle of public spaces and it was so unexpected, much like this surprising twist.

  1. I feel bad for his girlfriend, but it's nice that he tried to make his proposal memorable and unique. However- I felt staging a police standoff is a bit over the top.
