Emily McDougal - Child Left In Hot Car "Accidentally"

Summary: Justin Harris was given a life sentence for leaving his almost 2-year-old child in a hot car while he was at work all day. This event occurred in 2014, but Harris is only now being sentenced as evidence has risen. Harris claims this event was "accidental" and involved a temporary memory loss, but evidence points to the fact that his son would have been clearly visible to Harris as he had gotten out of his car. Harris was also sentenced to 32 more years in prison based on other incidents involving sexual texts to minors and other women.

Analysis: This article was written on December 5, 2016, by Mayra Cuevas to explain all the events surrounding Harris and his final sentence. I remember hearing about this when it happened, but I am still shocked by how incredibly awful it is. Whether on purpose or accidentally, this man has taken the life of his child, and that is something that can never be erased. His claim to innocence would have been much more believable to me if the evidence wasn't so stacked, and his actions shock me. An innocent child's life was taken either in malice or by accident, but a child's life was taken all the same. It is so important for us to stay aware of our surroundings and what is going on nearby so we can prevent events like this in the future.

Synthesis: Similar events happen more often that they should, and 39 children died in 2016 from heat stroke in cars. A notable one was a hospital CEO who left her 7-month-old child in a car as she ran errands in July. The child died from heat stroke and the charges have not been decided yet.
