Decrease in religious freedom - Kate Fehan 8th Period
According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, in 2015, there was a decrease in both religious and social tolerance. At least 17 countries have been labeled "Tier One," which means they have severe and ongoing violations of religious freedom. Problems in these countries include violence and a lack of voting rights and healthcare. Many factors have led to this decrease including the refugee crisis, political strife, and the growing power of Boko Haram. While religious freedom is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, acts like the Sedition Act have restricted rights before. This proves we have to always be aware of the laws being passed and stay up-to-date on current events to prevent governments from abusing their power.
