Rising numbers of Trump supporters both do and don's surprise political scientists. Part of the reason of the rise in numbers is because he is already the republican front runner. His opposition has quit the race, leaving only him in the republican party. There are, however, still more than one democratic nominees. The rising numbers surprise many in that there are so many people, even republicans, who are "anyone but Trump." This meaning that they will vote for anyone who isn't him.
The fear that Trump could be president is a major push factor for many Americans. Historically, the presidential candidate most different from the other options are the ones who win. When similar people are spit between two candidates, they earn roughly half of the votes from that group. But when a the opposite group has only one candidate to pick from, they earn all of the votes from that group. This could actually mean Trump becomes president. This would be tragic, and with the interest of all Americans considered, Trump winning the election is a horrible idea.
