Summary: Michael Santiago, former gang member, was charged with "felony child endangerment" for illegally buying a gun and hiding it in his home. The gun was bought after Santiago had testified against another gang member, and was intended to be used for protection. His six year old son found the gun hidden in his kitchen, and accidentally shot his three year other brother during a game of cops and robbers. The child was taken to Norwegian American Hospital and later moved to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died.
Analysis: Though it seems like the father had good intentions when buying the gun, it's obviously not safe to keep a loaded gun in a household with young, curious children. It's hard to say whether this scenario falls under child endangerment, or deals more with the reoccurring issue of gun control. Although this isn't anything like what we've seen in the past, almost always mass school shootings, this incident adds to the list of arguments about why America might have to rethink our "right to bear arms."
