Don't Breathe in China!-Nicholas Watson, 9th

Summary:
There is currently a toxic cloud of smog and pollution suffocating and chocking China. This cloud is so big you can see it from space. On Monday China issued its first "Red Alert" for Beijing, this means that there are dangerous levels of pollution and possible or imminent health risks for China. This dangerous situation has caused some schools to be closed along with factories. Although coal-fired power plants are the main cause for this hazardous air, and should not be reduced until the dangerous conditions reach their peak in 2030.With 100 and above being the level considered dangerous, as of Tuesday morning Beijing was at 200.

Analysis:
Pollution is becoming a major problem for many cities around the world, which could lead to the destruction of social, economic, political and geographic characteristics in these pollution filled societies and areas around them. Not only are trans-continental cities and countries are being affected by pollution, but here in America we see cities like Los Angeles and New York, some of the most known and iconic cities of the World, that are also being affected by dangerous, smog and polluted filled air. Even though these conditions may not seem like such a threat right now, over time these dangerous elements will catch up to us, and cause bad repercussions, like health issues and geographic penalties to our land and atmosphere. One major issue from pollution is Global Warming, a now irreversable deterioration of our ozone layers. On the contrary steps are being taken to help slow down the addition of pollution production, until a legit solution can be established. For example the Clean Air Act of 1970, which help maintain pollution levels in American cities. As for other solutions hopefully in the near future people may discover alternative, more effective and cleaner ways for energy production, but until then we will have to take small and any necsesary steps into the right direction.

  3. smog isn't only in China.. It's everywhere in the world. One step to fighting it would be for evreryone to stop eating meat and animal products. The amount of toxins in animals waste is crazy and effects our environment more than we realize. Cow's waste makes up for 18 percent of co2 emmision.. more than all transportation put together. and makes up for 2/3s of ammonia emmisions which causes acid rain.

  4. This is really scary. I do not think people realize that smog is a real issue that even effects us here in Dallas. I hope that China, and other places effected by smog, make changes in the way they handle pollution in order to prevent this from happening again.
