In the last year, the United States has reported 16 cases of the plague, and in the UK there have been cases of other 19th century diseases such as; scurvy and scarlet fever. Changes in living conditions, and medicines created a lessening of these diseases. but they seldom disappear. Here is a list of these diseases that we believed were eradicated. The plague killed around 60% of the population in the 14th century. It is rare in developed countries today, but this year there has been a jump, with 16 cases so far this year in the U.S. Rubella effects babies in the womb, and can cause many birth defects. Vaccines for Rubella became available in 1970. It is no longer in the U.S. but lives on in Africa and south-east Asia. Polio, rendering many paralized, has had 51 cases this year. This just proves that many of these diseases although rare, are still going on, whether we know it or not.

This article by Sophie Eastaugh and Meera Senthillingam, CNN, is really interesting. I had no idea that some of these diseases were still active and creating cases in the U.S. New medications and better living conditions have made these diseases way less dangerous than they were in history. But we are very lucky that these changes have been made. A lot of people probably dont know that these diseases still exist, but people need to realize that they do, and are still dangerous.
It is alarming that some of these diseases are making a comeback. Some people don't even realize they are spreading it or how contagious the disease is.
