"Oregon shooter's dad: 'That's what guns are, the killers" - Leah Messinger (period1)
Many questions were asked of Ian Mercer, the father of an Oregon shooter, regarding his son's recent scandal. After his interview one thing was made clear, what caused this sad event was the lack of gun control in our country. This past Thursday at Umpqua Community College Mercer's son, Chris Harper-Mercer staged an attack that killed nine people and injured nine others. When Ian was questioned about his son's mental state, he briefly admitted that obviously someone who killed nine people had to have some mental instability, however he would leave that for the police to discover.
His point, more importantly, was the fact that he had no idea that his son even owned a gun let alone thirteen. He went on to mention that, as a country, we always talk about gun control after such a tragic event but nothing ever gets done about it.
While I could see that Mercer could possible be leaving out key facts involving his son's mental state, I also agree with his point of view that something must be done about this issue and not just discussed. Guns should only be able to be owned by police officers or those who are protecting our country. Although we have the right to bear arms, this dramatically increases our chances of these kinds of tragedies happening again. People that are reckless and unstable should not be carrying weapons. In conclusion, for the safety of our citizens we should instill more strict gun laws, and I know Mercer agrees with this point of view.

I believe that people should have the right to bear A gun if they feel they need one in case of an emergency, but it is ridiculous that people let him own 13. -Julianne Swaykus 6
ReplyDeleteMatthew Homsher 9th- People who kill others aren't necessarily mental. The military is trained to kill, and our military isn't mental. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. The son is not necessarily mental, but he is violent and there is no way to restrict violent people from getting guns. There never will be because it's impossible to tell how violent a person is based on a test. However, background checks and psychoanalysis tests should be necessary to purchase a gun just in case and, additionally, we can improve security to prevent these shootings. It might be annoying to most gun activists, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
ReplyDeleteI agree that only police officers should have the right to own guns because of incidents like this one occur.
ReplyDeletePolice officers should have the right to own guns, but perhaps the background checks that happen before someone is permitted to own a gun should be made stricter.
