Are plastic trees the answer? Maddie Hanratty 8th period

Scientists are working on a potential way to store the carbon dioxide we are emitting so much of on a daily basis. Nature has its way of sucking up this carbon dioxide into what are known as "carbon sinks", or more commonly, trees. Trees naturally store carbon dioxide, but even with their help, the build-up is resulting in global climate change over time. Despite all our efforts to be eco-friendly, prevent littering, etc., CO2 is still an issue. We release CO2 every time breathe. Therefore, we need something bigger than a "reduce your carbon footprint" campaign. And we might be getting closer to a solution.
Using carbon dioxide absorbing enamel and other plastics that trap CO2, scientists are going back to basics by mimicking the design of a tree. Hopefully, in the near future, we will see a few plastic trees being released into the wild. But for now, the materials are too pricey and not as effective as they could be.
I think this is an innovative solution to a daunting problem. It would be really cool to see the trees somehow incorporating recycled materials, to prevent even more waste. I hope the idea is developed over time because it is an important issue that effects all earthlings, not just humans.
This relates to U.S. History because it shows how much of an impact only about two hundred years can have on our planet. Before the industrialization of human lifestyle, it took thousands of years for any drastic changes to be made on Earth. Now, however, we can manipulate our environment in ways never before imagined. This is partially due to the Industrial Revolution, a movement of greater manufacturing, etc., that occurred in America after the War of 1812.

  2. This reminds me of the gooey, artificial trees in the Lorax. Our world is turning into an artificial sphere. It's so sad.

  3. It is ridiculous that lately we turn to artificialness to be seen as a "perfect" looking world instead of looking at the world for what it really is.

I disagree with the rest of these comments. I think that these "trees" aren't a sign that we are deteriorating into an artificial world. These "trees" are a plan to be able to preserve nature from our harmful CO2 emissions.

  5. I agree with Godfrey. Yes it is sad that we have polluted our world to this pint, but look! Scientists are trying to fix our mistake. If these trees can be made with recyclable plastics then we have found a way to save the environment and recycle materials :)

  6. I could argue both sides. We are turning into an artificial world, however these tree are preventing any harm in the future... caused by us...- Lia kerkmn 6

  7. I think that these trees are a step in the right direction. The things that people do like use less water and recycle are helping but in the long run they don't do much. Since there are so many humans on the earth there needs to be something that absorbs a lot of the excess CO2 that plants don't. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

  8. Preserving the environment has become a major part of our daily lives. I feel like these artificial trees are more of an attempt to continue regulating the CO2 levels, not replacing real trees all together. This extra step will help the environment even further than we have been able to.

Plastic trees are most definitely not the answer, real trees are. Maybe if we stopped chopping down all of our forest to build shopping centers we wouldn't be having a CO2 problem. (sorry this comment was slightly dramatic)
