Alex Stone, a police officer in Clatskanie, Oregon filed a complaint that the city's police chief, Marvin Hoover, was making racist comments. According to Stone he compared African-Americans to "monkeys" when being debriefed about an arrested woman who said she was being discriminated against. Another police officer named Zack Gibson also filed the same complaint. Hoover was placed on paid administrative leave last month and made the decision to retire. He retired before his comments were fully investigated and the city has said they condemn his behavior and that they will conduct diversity training with their officers.
This was written by CNN and views the police officer as a terrible person and thinks that it's unjust he was allowed to retire. He slipped away from assuming responsibility. This article is meant to point out the impurities of police officers and the very prominent racial bias. There is a powerful portion of the police that are racist and pose a serious danger to anyone who isn't white. The fact that a white officer endangered himself and his family for the greater good is a positive that has come out of all of this. I think this really shows the Black Lives Matter movement is making progress and getting to people, the more you repeat a message or a simple phrase 'Black Lives Matter' it can really begin to have effects. Similar situations of racism in the police are getting a lot more coverage since Ferguson, and if these racist police fear being reported, losing their job and status, maybe they will be able to make a safer society and set the tone for new police.
Oh man! Why are there so many racial things happening? Is it a trend with cops or has media just not covered it before?
ReplyDeleteIt's always been around, we've just hit a boiling point now. It took years of mysterious deaths in America by police shootings to lead up to this.
