Victoria Garza "Kim Davis stands ground, but same-sex couple get marriage license"

Kim Davis returned to work on Monday after spending six days in jail for previously refusing to give Carmen and Shannon Wampler-Collins their marriage license because of religious beliefs. Despite her refusal, Carmen and Shannon received their marriage license from the Rowan County, Kentucky clerks office. Davis is continuing to allow her deputies to issue marriage licenses as long as her name is not found on them.

The U.S. has always been a place of diversity. There is such a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds, races, religions, and cultural practices present in this country, it is truly amazing. Same-sex marriage becoming legal in the U.S. was another huge step towards equality: people are finally free to marry who they love. Davis's refusal to give Carmen and Shannon a marriage license is a step in the wrong direction. It is infuriating that someone would deny people their legal rights because of their personal beliefs. I think that if Davis has such a big problem with giving same-sex couples licenses, she should find another job and let someone else distribute the marriage licenses. We have seen plenty of cases throughout U.S. history of discrimination with issues like slavery and segregation, sexism, and religious intolerance.

  1. It's sad to see someone so opposed to love. I recognize that religion is an important part of many people's lives, but we should all know that government can't be theology school.

  2. I've always believed that when someone enters their workplace, their religious beliefs go out of the building and should not interfere with their job. Yes, if one worker agrees with the other on a topic, then it makes sense for them to discuss, but if one worker disagrees with a customer, the discussion shouldn't even start and the customer should be treated politely.
