On Thursday, September 3, 2015, an eleven-year-old boy shot and killed a sixteen-year-old, who was allegedly trying to break into the house. The boy was home alone with his four-year-old sister and reports that the same teenager had tried to break into the house three times Thursday. However, a neighbor says that the sixteen-year-old never tried to enter the home, and she says she saw him and eleven-year-old talking loudly on the porch. The incident occurred in St. Louis, where there have been multiple shootings and break ins recently, which is why the eleven-year-old and four-year-old were home alone with a handgun, purchased by their mother. The reason for the children being left home alone is still unknown, but it resulted in the death of the "intruder" and there hasn't been any information on whether or not the eleven-year-old will be faced with any charges. The author, Kevin Conlon, is a news writer and chaser for CNN in the northeast region of the United States. Conlon didn't really express any of his views on the matter, he stated the facts of the news very formally. The article was produced on Friday, September 4, 2015, which means that the article doesn't include all of the information that has been released by now. I was completely unaware of the issues with breaking and entering along with shootings in the St. Louis area prior to reading this article, and it made me wonder if there were places closer in proximity to my own home that are experiencing such horrible encounters. The article was written to inform the public on the death of an unidentified sixteen-year-old boy and to maybe raise awareness for the lack of safety in the area. The point Conlon was trying to get across, was that the cases if breaking and entering in the St. Louis area are becoming more and more common, resulting in the deaths of more children. This document is important because it informed the public on the severity of the situation in St. Louis, and it can motivate people to be more cautious and take the issues more seriously.

Katie Schell - That poor 11 year old must have been so scared. What I don't get is why he didn't just call the police. If the teenager had tried to break into my house multiple times before I definitely would have contacted the authorities.

ReplyDeleteThis is a sad story. I also was unaware of the shooting and breaking and entering problems in St. Louis. I think that and 11 year old and a 4 year old should never be home alone, especially with all of those problems going on.
That must've been horrifying. They could've called the police but I guess in a way it was self defense because if thet teenager broke in the house he could've hurt them.
ReplyDeleteI am also confused as to why the boy did nothing about it earlier but then again we have no idea how this kid's family/home life was.
