As described in this article, actors are aiding police in understanding how to properly handle mentally ill people. They have started up a new training program that teaches officers how to calmly talk to people down from jumping off of high buildings or bridges. This new training program will help keep both mentally ill people and officers themselves. The officers are learning how to identify mentally ill persons and care for them instead of fighting them. While the officers are undergoing training they are evaluated by psychologists and instructors. there are also going to be an alternative place to take mentally ill people instead of putting them in jail or an emergency room.
I love this new program and I hope that more police forces start doing the same as NYC. This is going to save lots of lives since these newly trained officers won't have the immediate response of shooting first and asking questions later. Officers all over the country should have this kind of training. I also like the idea of having an alternative holding place than just jail. This is another step in the right direction for dealing with police brutality.
This is such a great idea for making the police forces better and this will help so many people (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)

ReplyDeleteThis is so great! Finally recognition for the mistreating a of mentally ill people. Police can't often see someone as mental I'll or not so they take harsh measures and it aweful! It's time for new training to be put into use, I'm very excited to see how this goes.
I think this is a fantastic idea. It will definitely help and I hope that this program will soon spread to other states.
