Miraloma Elementary has recently changed all of their male and female bathrooms with gender neutral bathrooms. The school had a few transgender students, who have a lot of anxiety when it comes to going to the bathroom. In the past, it has been hard for transgender students who were not allowed to go to the bathroom of their choice. One student at Miraloma once peed himself to avoid going to gender segregated bathrooms, and some kids hold it in all day so they don't have to go to the bathroom at school, which leads to some serious health problems. This is why Sam Bass, the principal of Miraloma Elementary, decided to put in only gender neutral bathrooms, since of they had a female, male, and gender neutral bathroom, it singles out the transgender students. The parents have not complained at all so far about the bathrooms.
Analysis
Since students are required to be at school for most of their day, I think that anything that makes them more comfortable there is a good thing. No one should ever feel too anxious to go to the bathroom that they pee themselves. This reminds me of in the past, when they stopped segregating the bathrooms by race. Unfortunately, I don't believe that went as well with the parents as this did. I'm glad the parents at Miraloma haven't complained, understanding that this makes going to the bathroom more comfortable for students.

I think it's awesome that the parents haven't complained because they should be putting the kid's feelings above their own. Being able to be as comfortable as possible in a place you have to be in for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week seems like a priority so this is a wonderful example of the path all of America should be getting on.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! This is awesome, I think this is the first real life story I have heard where the authorities really do care about the childrens' choices and safety!
