For Alzheimer's patients, resveratrol brings new hope-- Demi Tomasides

A new study has shown that if resveratrol, an antioxidant fount in grapes, chocolate, and red wine, was taken in concentrated dosages there might be a possibility of slowing down the progression Alzhimer's. Twenty one medical centers around the U.S. conducted a study that gave 119 patients 500 milligrams of resveratrol each-- the equal amount of resveratrol can be found in 1,000 bottles of red wine. This first round study shows that this pill could help balance the protein from buildup in the brain to circulation throughout the body. The main goal of the current study was to make sure that taking this amount of resveratrol would be safe for patients. The only negative side effect discovered was that, on average, patients lost about two pounds during the year that this study was being conducted. This really is a minor thing, though, considering that weight loss by Alzhimer's is already a problem. If this drug really could slow down the progression, a couple pounds shouldn't take a heartbeat worth of consideration. The article also states that more research should, and will be done on this potential drug.

I think this is a great thing. Throughout the years there has always been new research coming out about Alzhimer's about how it's formed and now you can test early to see if you have it and that you can't prevent it, so it's nice to finally see that there are some tests taking action against this orrible disease. I know this is a premature test and there are years, if not decades, worth of more research to be done but at least we have a foundation, however solid it is. It seemed like the author of this article believed in the research that is being done but believed just as strongly that there needs to be more research. Most likely we all know someone or someone's family, that has been affected by Alzhimer's. We seem to be in the same boat of fear that we could be like that one day mixed with not having a solid answer of why. This article was written to the for the people of those families and friends that just want some more information of why they are witnessing their family member suffer and know what they can do to prevent it for the future.

  3. This is progress. Alzheimer's affects so many families around the world, so finding something that could possibly slow down the disease is a step in the right direction. Hopefully scientists keep working on this. They seem to be on to something, and if this has the potential they are saying it has, America wouldn't have to give as much as it does to fund retirement homes.
