Claudia Anthony-3rd period "Bathroom access for transgender teen divides Missouri town"

This article discusses a walk out planned by parents and students at Hillsboro High School in Missouri as a peaceful protest for a transgender teen's right to use the girl's bathroom. Lila Perry is a transgender female and is a senior in high school. She had been using the female locker room to change for gym class, but many other girls said that it made them uncomfortable for her to change in there. Because of this parents of many of the girls argued to the school board that Perry should not be allowed to change with the rest of the girls. The school board said that they could compromise and that Perry could use a gender neutral bathroom. Lila does not want that, because she does not want to be segregated from everyone else only because she is transgender. She knows that she has the right to use the girls bathroom and is not willing to compromise, because it is her choice which bathroom she uses.

I admire how strong Lila is and the fact she won't let people push her around. She knows the only reason that people are trying to segregate her is because they do not understand and that not enough people are educated on what it means to be transgender. Anne Hutchinson was also a well-educated lady who intimidated the leaders of Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were frightened by how smart she was, and the fact that she had different opinions from them. They knew she was a threat to the colony and they forced her to leave. Unlike Hutchinson, I don't think they will be able to kick Lila Perry out, and she will continue to be herself and not let anyone stand in her way.

  1. I am glad this girl took a stand to protect herself. She shouldn't have to be separated from the school because she too is a person, like everyone else, with feelings. I like how you connected Lila to Anne Hutchinson. I agree that they were both very strong women who knew what they were talking about.

Everybody is human no matter what gender they want to be or even if they don't want to be categorized as a gender at all. I personally believe that gender is a label. I hope more people in america come to realize that as well. I am very happy for this girl for standing up for herself and what she truly believes in!

  3. It is a relief to hear someone protecting themselves like that. Especially in this time when things like transgender people are discriminated against. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

I too admire Lila for standing her ground in the midst of all this commotion over the subject, and no doubt some rude comments by her classmates. In my opinion, people tend to stick to what's traditional. When something they find to be foreign happens, they get defensive for no real reason, except the one saying they're "uncomfortable"- proving my point more so.

  5. I am so happy to hear people sticking up for one another, as well as themselves. We are moving forward, slowly but surely.
