9-Year Killed at Oregeon Beach by Collapsing Sand - Elvira Gamboa

9 year old Isabel Grace Franks died while she was playing in a hole at the beach in Oregon. It had suddenly collapsed in on her and when she was recovered she was unconscious and not breathing. Later, she was pronounced dead. Apparently this is a somewhat common occurrence and most people end up dying, considering that a cubic foot of sand is around 100 pounds of weight and 120 pounds when wet. The event itself is quite sad and hopefully more people will be aware of how easily sand can collapse on someone.

This article was written on Aug. 31, 2014 by Mark Morgenstein  and Faith Karimi. The article was meant to inform people of the possible dangers of digging holes in the sand and was probably directed to adults and especially parents with young children.

  1. I've never heard of this happening before.. Maybe since it's occurring more and more they will have warning signs just as you'd see sea level signs. I also think that children of such a young age should just stay away from holes at the beach, common sense. But it is such a sad and tragic news story.

  2. This is a very tragic story. Hopefully this will cause public security at beaches to look into more circumspect observation in the future.
