Israel Gives Green Light to Decriminalizing Marijuana Use

Summary: The Israeli government voted to decriminalize marijuana use this past Sunday. The new policy still has to be ratified but if passed would make the punishment for marijuana use a fine as opposed to an arrest. However, growing and selling marijuana would still be punished with a prison sentence. The money saved from the reduced number of arrests will go towards education on the harmful effects of marijuana use in public schools. Israel is one of the world leaders in medical marijuana research.

Analysis: I think it is a positive thing to see countries decriminalizing marijuana usage. The United States is gradually decriminalizing it. I don't think it's fair to put people in jail for nonviolent drug crimes, as a felony offense can often ruin someone's life. With addictive drugs, like meth and cocaine, I think it isn't fair to arrest offenders. I think it's better to help people with their addiction by sending them into rehabilitation. This article can be synthesized to the War on Drugs in the eighties and nineties.
