The article that I read this week was about some changes that are going to be made regarding the appearance of food labels. The first lady, Michelle Obama, was the one who made the announcement about the redesigning of labels in order to make it easier to see the exact amount of calories in the food you are eating. The FDA has approved this in addition to ensuring that manufacturers include the amount of added sugar as well as making other important information more clear. The reason that this is such a huge announcement is because, unlike dietary guidelines, there is no law enforcing the regular adjustment of food labels. Companies are being given around two years to complete their changes and supplement labels will also be updated in response to the changes.
This article relates back to the first of several laws enforced by the Food and Drug Administration, the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. This law's main purpose was to ban foreign and internal traffic in mislabeled food or drug products. Although this is not an exactly similar situation, it does reflect the country's attempt to improve the products that they sell by making sure that the consumers have the correct information.
