Oregon Militia Man: We Face ‘Backlash’ But Black Lives Matter Doesn’t
by: Tristin Manus 8th period
Summary: The Oregon militia, which is composed of a group of some two-dozen mostly white, armed men, has occupied the Melheur Wildlife Refuge to protest the re-sentencing of two local ranchers convicted of arson for setting fire to federal lands. They claim that they received more backlash towards them than #blacklivesmatter movement which is totally not true. The movement is for the uplifting and empowerment of black people, saying we matter because of the recent events that has happen( severe police brutality). Black Lives Matter is a national, diverse movement that uses classic organizing techniques, such as blocking access to roadways and holding peaceful citywide marches, to raise awareness about people of color who have been killed by police brutality.
Analysis: First of all, how dare this "militia men movement" compare their issues to something entirely different and on another level. The negative perception of the group (blacklivesmatter) is widespread in certain political circles and conservative media. Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and Elizabeth Hasselback labeled Black Lives Matter a “hate group” for vocally criticizing police officers. GOP presidential candidates Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) have also accused the group (black lives matter) and fomenting “lawlessness.” Which is totally the opposite of what we are trying to do. But meanwhile, black people are still being murdered for senseless accusations ( police brutality) while federal officials are monitoring the ARMED occupation of the wildlife refuge near Burns, Oregon, but have not yet intervened. That's is white privilege AND white supremacy folks. If you are white and you do these type of things, it's okay because your privilege protects you. Racism is still prevalent in this day and time, and it never stopped in the 1960s. We have blacklivesmatter for a reason, and for this "militia men organization" to say they are receiving more "backlash" , Remember you aren't the ones getting killed, dehumanzied and stereotyped every single day just because of your skin color.
