Desiree Smith period 4 Lawyers for Georgia man accused of leaving son in hot SUV ask judge to toss certain evidence

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/12/14/lawyers-for-georgia-man-accused-leaving-son-in-hot-suv-ask-judge-to-toss/

Summary:

A man accused of leaving his toddler son in a hot SUV to die. Police says that Justin Ross Harris left 22-month-old Cooper in an SUV on a hot day in June 2014. He's facing multiple charges, including murder, and has been held without bond since the day his son died. Attorney's for Harris says that police went on a "fishing expedition," applying for overly broad warrants. Prosecutors countered that the warrants were reasonable and were based on voluntary statements made by Harris.

Analysis:
This article was published December 14, 2015. This event occurred in Georgia. I notices from my pass research on parents leaving there children in a hot car, has increase in number of cases over the years. There still no solution to this problem because its not like the child can stop it. This should have an negative effect on childrens and parents so it not a lose/win situation. The children are dead and the parent ends up in jail so its pretty much no point of commiting the crime. This article is to pretty much informing us that this is a huge problem and its going to take time to solve it.

"No Specific and Credible Holiday threat"- Calen Smith 9th

President Obama has assured the country that everyone should feel safe in their own country. He has said that the US is free any credible and/or specific threats. Obama insists that anyone targeting Americans will have no where to hide. Usually President Obama receives briefing in the White House Situation Room but this year, with recent terror attacks, he decided to go public to show the nation preparedness.

Analysis: This was a very smart move on Obama's part. As President it is his job to make sure we are all safe and make sure that we feel safe as well. This was a great way to ease the minds of everyone in the nation, because as recent attacks have taken place, people are starting to feel less and less safe.

Jessica Aguilar Ramos- "Not All Cops"

While it is true that not all cops are responsible for the police brutality that seems so common in our news nowadays, this article shows to us that while there are those that don't actively participate in these horrid acts, their silence is just as damaging as the actual wounds inflicted by the corrupt ones.

Silence is a very powerful weapon if used properly, something proven by, say, that one monologue from The White Rose by Lillian Groag, which is based on actual events and quotes from the final moments of members of the White Rose (a group of students during the second World War who opposed the Nazi regime and paid dearly for their courage). If I recall correctly, Sophie's monologue emphasizes over and over again that the silence of those who want to be left in peace, who don't want to get involved in fear of the consequences for themselves and their families are the most powerful weapons an oppressor can have and let's face it- at this point we can't deny that the police force is turning into an oppressive force against certain groups. If that can't be fixed, who will there be for anyone to turn to if the people who are meant to protect us would sooner shoot us than help with the actual problem?

Jessica Aguilar Ramos- Trump is Worse than Voldemort

At this point there's no denying it- Donald Trump is far worse than Voldemort, to the extent that J. K. Rowling herself felt the need to point it out on social media. While Voldemort is pretty scary in that he had a group of extremist followers willing to go to great lengths to establish their "pureblood superiority" agenda, Trump is more terrifying in that he is not a fictional character we can wish away. In all honestly, I don't understand how that man can be for real with all the ridiculous things he says, but even more frightening is the fact that some percentage of the American population AGREES with him. This guy has been compared to such villains as Voldemort and even Hitler with good reason- the similarities between the two are so plainly there that I can't fathom why people choose to ignore it as though they'd never had a history lesson in their lives. Honestly, this whole thing just makes me sick of the world we're living in and terrified of what the future may hold if such a vile creature as Trump were elected president. (Sorry not sorry.)

Jessica Aguilar Ramos- Maid abused by cricket star

This article is about the developments in a case against cricket star Shahadat Hossain and his wife, Nritto Shahdat, who have been accused of having beaten an 11-year-old live-in maid recently. The situation was brought to light when the girl ran away from their home and was rescued by a journalist who took her to a hospital due to the extent of her injuries. This situation shows us that child labor and essentially slavery are not over throughout the world as we would like to think, rather those institutions are alive and thriving unless someone can find a proper solution for these problems and truly make them a thing of the past, not something barely hidden and willingly ignored due to its unfortunate necessity for some.

Jessica Aguilar Ramos- 2 Dead Children Found in California Storage Unit

The following article brings to light a horrific event that I personally wish would never have happened. It regards the death of two as of yet unidentified children found locked in a storage unit. The prime suspects in this case are Tami Joy Huntsman and Gonzalo Curiel. They have previously been accused of having tortured a 9-year-old girl and are now being tied to this crime of having taken the lives of two innocent siblings (it is presumed that they are siblings, neither their relationship to each other or to the suspects have been confirmed yet). It is unfortunate that such a thing should happen, but it goes to show that such violence is something that endures the test of time, as proven by other killers in throughout history such as Gacy the Clown and the uncaught killer in Alabama back in the 70's if I recall correctly, a spree in which the main victims were young children. We can only hope that perhaps someday this sort of violence will cease, especially against innocents such as these.

Jessica Aguilar Ramos- Don't Collectively Punish Muslims

This article is one writer's opinion on what should most definitely not be a reaction to a shooting in early December that left 14 dead and 21 injured. The shooters were a husband and wife, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik. While the perpetrators were Muslim, they do not represent the entirety of the Muslim community and as such this tragedy should not be used as an excuse to create more anti-Islamic sentiment in our already racist country. If people were to decide to punish every Muslim in the country for the actions of these two individuals, it would make about as much sense as banning paper because someone got a papercut once. This reminds me of the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and what they have led up to now- a whole lot of Islamophobia, war, and just plain destruction.

Los Angeles Schools Set to Reopen after Threats - Calen C. Smith 9th period

Schools in Los Angeles were set to reopen Wednesday after several board members received an email threat. More than 2,700 officers were involved in the search of weapons, explosives, and other dangers of more than 1,500 school sites. It was concluded that the schools were safe and that they could resume the following morning. Officials say that they do not know who sent the threat or where it came from, but the FBI has determined that the threat is not credible. Similar threats were delivered in NY but no schools were closed.

Analysis: I believe that the Los Angeles school district was right to do what they did. It was great that they took the initiative to make sure that the students were safe, especially after the many incidents and terrorist attacks that have happened recently. If the threats were ignored and it turned out to be real, there could have been many casualties, something not needed especially after the most recent terrorist incident in California.

Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rate ~ Calen Smith 9th Period

On Wednesday (Dec 16) the Federal reserve raised its key interest rate from a range of 0% to 0.25% to a range of 0.25% to 0.5%. Although this is a very small hike, it will benefit millions of Americans including investors, home buyers & savers.

Analysis: I think this is a very good thing. This shows that the economy is slowly but surely getting stronger and as a result it no longer has to rely on different crutches to help it keep stable.

Neighboring Earth Like Planets Could Share Alien Life "Randi Thompson"

There’s only one planet in our solar system that can communicate across interplanetary space. But imagine if things were different. Say if Mars, for example, had intelligent beings able to talk to us at the same time as we talked to them — how would that have changed our history?
Recent press released information speculating about communication between evolved intelligent beings on such planets, but when asked about and the scenario is “improbable” — although there is  a quote to stand behind . In our own solar system, Earth is more than 4 billion years old and telescopes have only been in use for 400 years, or 0.00001 percent of that time. Even if the planets can’t share communications, they possibly could share similar biological histories. We already know of meteorites that travel from Mars and impact the Earth.

Robert Gilliam Prd. 5 "An 8 Year Old Just Became Mexico's First Medical Marijuana Patient"

Summary: This article speaks of a young girl named Grace, and how, due to her Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, she is able to take medical marijuana. This disease causes sufferers to have seizures, which in this case, couldn't be stopped by anything. This is when they turned to medical marijuana, and it has done them nothing but good.

Analysis: This is great to know. I personally think that because of irresponsible recreational use, marijuana is disrespected. These are lives that are being saved here, is that not reason enough for mass legalization? Of course, with great restrictions and strict enforcement. I think this could be revolutionary in the medical community.

Robert Gilliam Prd. 5 "This is the sh*t: Sewage Could Help Restore Depleted Farmland"

Summary: ThIs article, by Matt Smith, is about how sewage (hence the sh*t reference) can be used to restore farmland that has been lost. It speaks of how chemical pollution and erosion are all causing this and how it affects farmers. Using sewage treatment, instead of high chemical treatments. This problem could be solved.

Analysis: This makes me think of farmers in the olden days. At some point, im sure, even if not due to chemicals, farmland has depleted. In this case, then it would bea great idea for them to have used sewage, I suppose. This just mainly makes me think of farming and how regiments have or may changed over the years due to certain things.

L.A. Schools; Back In Session - Ava Cosentino

Summary:
On Monday, several Los Angeles Unified School District officials received multiple threats that were later found to have originated out of Germany. The Superintendent of schools in this district, Steven Zipperman, called off classes on Tuesday to do full campus searches and to ensure all students were safe and alive. After careful investigating procedures, it has been decided that all district schools will be back in session, starting Wednesday.

Analysis:
Though there are two standpoints on this situation, I do feel that the Superintendent did the right thing by taking all safety procedures, even if it turned out to be a hoax. Now, in this day and age, you cannot play around with treats and brush them off like they are nothing, instead, they need to be heavily investigated and avoided. In the event that it wasn't a hoax and all students were expected to report to school as usual, terrible things could have occurred. I link this to all past terrorist attacks even though it didn't turn out to be real, because there was a possibility that it could have been added to the list of attacks on the U.S., however, everyone is safe, and the school district is sure of it.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/15/us/los-angeles-schools-closed-threat/index.html

Tristan Spohn 3rd Period

Schools in the district of L.A and New York received very similar electronic threats, however reacted to those threats in completely opposite ways. The campus' in L.A. decided to close school down, while New York claimed it to be just a hoax.
Analysis: This reminds me significantly of the issue of slavery in the North and the South. In both cases, their very clearly opposite viewpoints that were heavily influenced by region. In L.A., the article informed that a terrorist attack had already happened only 60 miles away, whereas that was not the case in New York. Similarly, the environment of the South was much more different than the North, causing a much more different viewpoint on the matter. Essentially surrounding have a monumental impact in the way we perceive things.

Lincoln Anthony (8th Period)- 5th GOP Debate

The time has come for the final debate between the multitude of presidential candidates coming from the GOP for this year, and this one seemed about the same as, well, every other GOP debate they've held this year. Basically it can be summed up as Donald Trump saying some dumb stuff about ISIS, and being rebutted by the other candidates with some different, yet equally stupid, stuff. That's really it.

I feel like the quality of both the actual debate, and the candidates taking place in said debate has steadily declined in quality since the creation of our government. I mean, just imagine what it would have been to experience a debate the likes of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. You would get to actually experience educated men duke it out on the fields of actual, legitimate arguments rather than the clowns who are representing the Republican party today. That's really what they are, clowns. I've watched most of the GOP debates and the thing I've really noticed from them is just how repetitive they are.

The Earth is spinning slower? by Eleanor E-W

New studies show that the earth's rotation is slowing ever so slightly down (like a thousandth of a second a year) and that the slowing down is because of global warming (changing ocean levels, melting glaciers--all that)! It's not really going to affect us that much right now, but it's still crazy to see the affect global warming can have.
I think this is kind of scary actually! It's weird and frightening to think global warming can have that much of an affect on our planet, just like it's weird and frightening to think that civil war and the conflict between north and south still affect us today!

Luz Lopez(4th period)- 2 Dead children found California storage unit

Two people are being charged with child abuse. They are now also being charged with murder. Two bodies were found in a California storage unit. They were kids the age of three and five. They are believed to have been siblings. Tami Joy Huntsman, age 39, and Gonzalo Cruiel, age of 17 are being held in Plumas County Jail.
All I wanna say is that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. If they are guilty, they deserve to stay in jail the rest of their lives. Killing a child is something that can't be undone. This kinda reminds me of when Hitler killed all those jews because he though it was the right thing to do.

Victoria Garza "Nurse with Tuberculosis May Have Exposed Over 1,000, including 350 infants"

Recently, a nurse in Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose California was diagnosed with tuberculosis. 350 infants, 368 parents, and 308 employees have been exposed to it and could have potentially contracted it. Tuberculosis is an airborne disease which is only contagious if the person has an active case. Tuberculosis in infants can be fatal, not only affecting their lungs but potentially spreading through their bloodstream and effecting other organs. They have already begun a screening process to identify any possible cases, but so far no one has tested positive. They are also offering preventative treatments for infants as well as treatments for other patients.

This kind of accident can be extremely harmful, especially considering the small infants. I'm assuming this woman wasn't aware that she had tuberculosis or that she was potentially spreading it to other people. I'm sure if she or the hospital were aware of it, they wouldn't have allowed her to come. Still, I think there should be some sort of regulation to make sure employees are healthy to ensure the safety of the patients. This is similar to the Englishmen who unknowingly brought disease to the Indians when they first came to the New World.

Cosby sues 7 accusers back // Uriel Cruz, Period 6

Warning // This rant/current events blog contains sensitive material. Don't hate me.
Cue the jazz and "Ooo, Lord"s, because Cosby's back. Cosby has had it with the accusations and is countering 7 claims of sexual assault. Cosby is countersuing for all the "malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory accusations" he's been degraded for.
A compilation of interviews with some women who claim to have been raped by Cosby was available on the CNN website so I checked it out, and boy oh boy was it something else. I watched through all of the video and I had a smug look on my face by the end. These women paused, stuttered, and looked around as if they were making up their claims during the interview. Sure, it's been a long time so their memories are blurred, but if they want to accuse Bill of anything like that, they need to know their story. It felt like watching rejected auditions for a crime fighter show.
America's recent history tells the tale of women rising up against the man and fighting for equality. Here, along with many others, is an example of going over the line. Women are very close to being, if not already, the alpha in society. Here's the thing though, this was started for equality. Women have dominated the men and it has many pros, but many cons. Accusing any man of raping you may be the easiest thing to get away with, especially now. If anyone testifies against a supposedly violated woman, they're declared misogynistic. As simple as that. These women are exploiting the feminist movement and making it something evil and unjust. Don't believe me? Go to any page on Instagram that has the courage to post edgy memes. I'm extremely confident that you'll find a joke about women like that in between the suicide and terrorist jokes. These types of women are internet memes. They've become a joke. They're discrediting the feminist movement they claim to be a part of and it's not fair to the men who are harassed and the women who are truly fighting for equality. Bill is doing the right thing in my opinion and I support him.

Layla Maynard: Islamaphobia in North America Gaining Popularity

Summary: Many recent acts of violence have been carried out in public mosques in the United States. Recent statistics show 2015 has had the most number of incidents in mosques, tripling the record set the year before that. Incidents include harassment, threats, zoning, damage, and vandalism at Islamic houses of worship. Post 9/11, a rise in Islamaphobia was apparent in our society, but the acts of violence committed in the last year were different, and more serious.

Analysis: We have to do our best as a nation to move forward with the capability of staying open minded and welcoming as well as helpful to those in need. We has to understand the difference between Muslims and terrorists, you'd think the difference was clear enough. Innocent lives can not be spared due to our blatant hate and ignorance.

Turkey dogs take America by friendly storms-Bethany Wolfe 3rd

summary:
Many golden retrievers, a growing fad in Istanbul, roam unwanted. They are bought as puppies and kicked out when they get too big and difficult to care for, most end up walking the roads or forests or caged in shelters. However, Yasemin Baban has taken it upon herself to make a difference and find a home for these sweethearts. Surprisingly, dozens of the dogs have found homes in Atlanta, Georgia among other places in the U.S.
analysis:
It's heartbreaking to know so many goldens live without homes as they are adapted to houses rather than the outdoors. However, knowing that people like Baban are doing whatever they can to find the goldens homes is very encouraging. Although they are criticized by some who believe the dogs are for testing, they continue in their work to save them.

Seattle council allows uber drivers to join a union Jasmine Rodriguez Period 4

This article is about Uber drivers in Washington. They are trying to avoid regulations put on traditional taxi services. In addition, they want to pass a measure that allows the drivers to band together and bargain with companies for certain working conditions. They had to fight for their out-of-the-box rights, as it is quite untraditional to the typical boss/worker relationship.

This is similar to when the Northern states banded together to form the Union during the Civil War. Just like the Uber drivers, they had to stay focused on the larger goals of the group rather than small individual concerns (that would stray the group away from the focus, and example being the opposition to Lincoln's strategy from the Northern Democrats) to lead the team to success. Once the Union became  a strong unified force (following the re-election of Lincoln in 1864), they were able to conquer the Confederacy and become the victors in the Civil War.

Muslims don't agree with Trump? Wait, why not?! Maddie Hanratty, 8th

Trump said in an interview that although his Muslim friends are glad he is talking openly about radicalism in the U.S., they cannot support his plan to Muslims. He says he understands, but he thinks it is the only way to follow through with all of the talk about radicalism.

I think it's pretty obvious that his Muslim friends wouldn't support this. I also don't think that Trump is the only one talking about extremism being present in America. His interview made it sound as if he was the only one enlightening people about this danger. Yes, he talks about it frequently, but this does not make him an expert, and it is a pretty popular subject right now so he is definitely not alone.

I can relate this to Grandfather Clause because Trump's policy targets a group of people whether they have terrorist intention or not. Grandfather Clause did a similar thing because it made generalizations about the past, and made it so that African Americans could not vote in order to preserve white supremacy.

Health Effects of Recreational Marijuana - Emily Rosuck 4th

It's no secret that Cannabis (marijuana, weed, pot) has become the most popular drug of choice among almost everyone. Many recreational users argue that it's completely natural, because often, it is simply dried leaves from the cannabis plant, that people often smoke or use through vapor. What most people are unaware of is that the amount of THC has been significantly increased in weed because it can now be scientifically engineered for a higher high. This puts users at a significantly increased risk of a dangerous reaction to weed, as annual Emergency Room visits related to marijuana use is estimated at over 376,000.
Much of the argument to legalization of marijuana is attributed to the claim that it's not addictive like tobacco or nicotine, when in fact high doses of THC regularly can lead to addiction. Studies suggest that 1 in 11 weed users are addicted, though the numbers are high for those who smoke regularly or start in their teens. Long term use of weed has been linked to several mental health problems including depression and anxiety and, in teens, can provoke suicidal thoughts. There are also cases of hallucination and paranoia, for those who already have mental problems, like schizophrenia, weed can make those symptoms worse.
Many teenagers who smoke pot believe that it's not at all dangerous because, as previously stated, it comes from a plant, and no one has ever heard of someone who overdosed on marijuana. However, for middle and high schoolers, marijuana affects brain development, it causes problems with thinking, memory and learning that could potentially be permanent.
Contrary to popular belief, heavy pot smokers can have the same breathing problems as cigarette smokers, while it is unclear as to whether or not pot can lead to lung cancer, that heavy amount of smoke in the lungs can still cause frequent coughing, excess phlegm, and risk of lung infections.
This article is not to tell you to not smoke marijuana, but many people smoke it believing that there are no health risks involved. This article isn't meant to tell you to stop, it is meant to inform you on potential health risks so at least if one decides to smoke, they know what they're medically up against.

Florida Police Shoot and Injure 14- year old Black Male for carrying a airsoft gun

By: Tristin Manus 8th

Summary: Police in Jacksonville, Florida shot and injured 14-year old black male who the say pointed the airsoft gun at an officer, prompting him to open fire. The officer identified, Josh Livingood, mistook the gun for a real weapon. The teenager, who had a known history of mental illness, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. The teenager was at least shot at about 6 times but only one bullet manage to puncture his leg. Livingood has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of this situation.

Analysis: This as bee at least the third time in over a year the police have shot a black individual holding a fake weapon. November marked the year anniversary of Cleveland police shooting of Tamir Price- the 12- year old black male who was playing in the park with a toy gun when he was fatally shot down by Officer Timothy Loehmann. This is why we uplift #BlackLivesMatter, because of police brutality and abuse of power. We do not want a repeat of what happen to Tamir, we want immediate consequences for the wrong doings of  Officer Livingood. So finally they decided that Black kids can have mental illness instead of being accused of being thugs? More and more everyday I hear about another black person receiving injustice for the faults of police officers. But shooting him 6 times? Six times for a toy gun.

Hoverboards catch fire!!?? by Eleanor E-W

Amazon has stopped sellling 97% of the hoverboards they usually offer due to reports of the hoverboards catching on fire. This article focuses on a particular brand, Swagway (classic lmao) who's hoverboards Amazon has stopped selling. Exhibition on Early Female Photographers- Bethany Wolfe 3rd

summary:
An exhibit pays homage to famous female photographers in Paris. "Who is afraid of women photographers" is on display at the Musee d'Orsay and the Musee de l'Orangerie featuring artists from around the world such as Dorthea Lange, Ella Maillart, Christina Broom, and Alice Austen. It also displays the UK and America's first female press photographers. Photographs on display are not only historical but feature fashion and lifestyle from early 1800's to late 1900's.

Bill Cosby Sues 7 of his accusers-Molly Mitchell 5th

Summary:

Just about everyone has heard of how comedian Bill Cosby has been accused by dozens of women of sexual assault. And now he is retaliating, suing 7 women on claims that they have falsely ruined his reputation and good name. The lawyer of the women though, says he sees through Cosby's feeble act, and claims that Cosby is simply diverting attention away from himself in an attempt to let all of his accusations lose steam.

Analysis:

I can't really say I doubt that Bill Cosby is in fact a rapist, and that he is using publicity to divert audiences attention from his crimes. Its too much to think otherwise. But then again, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Highest temperatures since 1899! by Kennedy Park

The U.S. is having one of the warmest temperatures in December history. This week of last year Buffalo NewYork already had a foot of snow on the ground! Why this warm winter? El NiƱo brought warm air from the Pacific Ocean to the East of the United States. Many people will be wearing shorts to do their Christmas shopping this year!

I thought we were going to have a white Christmas! These record breaking temperatures relate back to the year of 1899 when Buffalo New York had only gotton .1 inches of snow by this time. Guess that's a broken record for this year. This topic is very important because it shows that green house gases are rising and are the cause for rising temperatures.

"School Reopens" - Connor Coleman -8th period

Today, many schools in the Los Angeles area were shut down due to the possible threat of a bomb going off. It is said that it was just an email. However, faculty did not take this lightly due to the recent events in San Bernardino and didn't want to risk the students' lives. After a very thorough investigation, schools are scheduled to reopen tomorrow.

This scare could have easily been another gun related tragedy like the shooting at Sandy Hook. Thankfully, the staff was well alert about the situation. I feel these kinds of issues are hard to resolve because there is no real solution

Zoe Norton-Rodriguez---9---350 infants may have been exposed to tuberculosis at California hospital

350 infants may have been exposed to tuberculosis at California hospital

An employee with tuberculosis who worked in the newborn nursery may have exposed 350 babies, over 350 mothers and over 300 employees to this dangerous illness. This disease won't spread as easily among adults but the risk for newborns exposed is very high. The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center will be screening mothers and children so they can catch it before its too late.

This is similar to how the Europeans unknowingly brought over diseases to America. The Native Americans were unused to their kind of disease so like the babies they were at a much higher risk than any other European settler.

in this article, an interviewer has a conversation with one of the moms of the victims that was gunned down 3 years ago in the tragedy of sandy hook. the mother talked about how this time of year is when the memories start flooding back on how things used to be. ever since the shooting a support group was made to help the families of the victims and let them know that they are not alone and promote safety across schools in america. a high school in Oklahoma was so moved by the idea of this that they wanted to do something to help and were granted 10 thousand dollars to put their ideas into motion.

its depressing to know that families of the victims have to live with the pain of the tragedy for years to come and theres not much we can do to help them. i am very pleased to hear that to this day sandy hook has not been forgotten and there are organizations being created to help the different causes. this huge tragedy impacted america in huge ways just like 9/11 did. of course the attacks were 2 totally different things but still left the same amount of permanent damage. i hope that america continues doing its best to heal from the awful attacks that have happened in our history.

Claudia Anthony "This is the end of fossil fuels"

The adoption of the "Paris Agreement" on Saturday at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was a huge step towards global conservation. The agreement, states that countries that take the pledge will limit global warming below 1.5 degrees. This may mean the end of fossil fuels and a possibility that the world will have zero green house gas emissions by 2080. Steps like this agreement help to avoid super droughts, rising rides, dangerous floods, and other causes of global warming. The committee, COP21, realized that it is more effective for countries to work together, rather than try to take individual action towards improving the state of the environment.

I think it's wonderful that many countries are working together to decrease global warming, and I hope that this agreement is effective. The effectiveness depends on how willing the countries are to save the planet, and I hope they all give 100% dedication. This agreement shows how much the world has changed since the time of the colonies, in which the British colonists had total disregard for preserving natural resources.

Do voters have to right to candidates medical records? Alora Lieck

link

This is a very interesting article as it is already connected to US history! It shows the known medical information from a handful of ex-presidents and many would-be candidates. Trump recently allowed a pinch of his personal records to be released stating he has good blood pressure, as well as taking aspirin daily. Now thats not really anything alone to keep him from running. BUT there are a handful of presidents' records who should have been put to the public... John Adams was later known to be bipolar, Lincoln was know to be depressed, and grant would have been a diagnosed alcoholic with social anxiety. The question though is: should this info be public to voters? I believe in cases of potential fatal illness or mental issues it should be released. That way if that president is supposed to die within a year they would be exempt.

Russia bracing for hit to economy Alora Lieck

Will Russia go broke?
link

A new statement was released earlier this week naming the predicted oil prices for the 2016 year. Oil from Iran has lowered the cost per barrel because there is a higher supply now. The annual budget for Russia had oil marked at $50 pb although it is now foreseen that they will have to sell it at $30 pb greatly decreasing their economy's worth. This is similar to mercantilism in the case where Iran is Great Britain, they have the upper hand in the oil market and are forcing other countries to either work for them or suffer financially.

Changes to the Internet by Shelby Linker, 8th period

On January 1st, 2016, anyone with a phone that is older than five years old [the phone] will not be able to access certain parts of the internet, more specifically, the encrypted web. Encryption is the conversion of electronic data into another form, also known as cipher text, which cannot be easily understood by anyone except authorized parties, it's basically the most effective way to achieve data security. Although this won't directly affect most of the people reading this, it will affect many people worldwide. In other countries it could affect up to 7% of current internet users.

I truthfully don't understand the whole encrypted web part but the text that I read said that it included not being able to safely access Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. These, especially Google, are large portals to accessing information on the internet and other people around the world. Most of the U.S. population has become heavily dependent on the internet so the chances of not being able to safely use websites, or the internet at all, is a huge problem. Firefox has already switched over and immediately saw a decrease in downloads, Facebook and others are trying to fight the plan or at least delay the date that the plan is supposed to be enforced. Let's try and put this in perspective for those who might still think this isn't a serious problem or that it doesn't concern them. Imagine the whole population of Booker T, then, suddenly, a portion of the students weren't able to access the Internet. Imagine how distraught we would be, not only do we heavily depend on the Internet to keep up with others that are far away and for entertainment but many of us have homework that can only be completed over the Internet (for example, this blog post). Having the ability to access knowledge being ripped away from you suddenly just because you aren't able to upgrade your phone is completely unfair. Someone might say, "Well I can just go home and use the desktop or got to a library," as great as that is for you to have these resources, the countries that would be most affected by this change are developing countries and don't have access to the resources that we are so privileged to have. I don't understand why we even feel the need to mess with the internet, it's perfectly fine and weird how it is, there's no need to try and "fix" it. In a way this reminds me of segregation, specifically segregation in schools. Young African American's were denied the ability to learn the same materials as the Whites because of circumstances which they couldn't control, the same goes for those being affected by this huge, unnecessary, change.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Kenley Turner 3rd - Dutch Museum Renaming Art for Cultural Sensitivity

Summery: A Museum in Amsterdam is taking an initiative phase where many of the artworks are being renamed due to cultural sensitivity. For example: instead of "Negro Girl", a painting will be called "picture of girl holding fan". Many people native to Amsterdam don't understand why these terms are offensive, but the museum director realizes that they are, so they are changing it.

Analysis: I think that it is a big step for people to be aware of which terms are offensive and which terms are not. I also don't think that people should be using these terms during conversation. However, considering the setting, and art museum, I think it is important that people properly capture the time period, and the artist's perspective. I'm not saying people shouldn't get offended when they hear culturally insensitive words, but I do think it is important to remember a time that we were once at in history. They use these words in history books to convey a particular time period, and I think that is important. Maybe instead of completely changing the names, they could've just put the titles in quotation marks, like they do in history books. It is also a censorship issue, and I DO 100% believe an artist can say whatever they want to say, no matter how wrong or un-agreeable it is.

Mental Health Care would curb violence // Kai Jones 1st period

In this article a gun club owner is saying that closing loopholes in gun regulation and increasing mental health care would help prevent gun violence and stop bad people from doing the wrong things. Mental health is only one of the issues with gun laws.

Though increasing mental health care might help, supplying every person who is deemed mentally well with a gun wouldn't. Regardless of how mentally someone is people still get angry and when they have a gun with them or close by they will use it. Everyone is already on edge, scared or what might happen next and they are arming themselves. The second amendment was made to protect frontiersmen.

Nicholas Godfrey Period 8: And yet another man trying to help ISIS...

Summary: A man in Maryland has been found to have received money from ISIS to help fund another terrorist attack. He received about $9,000 from ISIS just recently. He had also received about $1,000 from somebody in Egypt last June. When questioned, he claimed it was his mother sending him money, but it has been found that it was a childhood friend who had sent him money from ISIS. He claimed that he was just trying to scam ISIS by taking money and then not carrying out any terrorist attacks. Some of the money has been spent from his laptop for pay-as-you-go phones and personal expenses. He will be in prison for 15 years for attempting to give information as well as 8 years for two other charges.

Analysis: I just can't believe this! I thought that maybe all of this ISIS stuff would just go away soon, but it seems like these occurrences are becoming more and more common. It seems like everyday there is something new about evidence or a new person convicted of trying to help ISIS or another attack. I don't get what seems so pleasant about ISIS that these people are going to perform terrorist attacks. They are promising a better nation for all of them, but how are they going to get to experience that "better nation" if it ever does somehow succeed if they're in prison or dead?!? I think that this proves to us that Donald Trump's plan of banning any Muslims from coming into America will literally do NOTHING. Yes there are cases when these terrorists come in from out of the country but we see an example RIGHT HERE that ISIS can influence absolutely ANYBODY they want. We see here, that social media has been a great thing for communicating with your friends, but has become such a horrible thing too! These terrorists are able to plan terrorist attacks over the internet! I can connect this to when the people of America were trying to revolt against Britain. They had to communicate and plan in secret meetings or by letter. (Now Americans were justified in revolting against Britain, and ISIS is completely bad in trying to attack all these countries.) The point is that social media has just become a vessel that makes terrorism much more accessible.

Trump hits back at 'dopey' Saudi billionaire

By: Morgan T. Smith

Summary: After Donald Trump demanded all Muslims to be banned from the
US, he is also calling that Saudi Arabia take in all Syrian refugees.

Trump tweeted:
“Has [...] Saudi Arabia, taken any of the Syrian refugees? If not, why not?”

This comment evoked Saudi prince Prince Alwaleed, the chairman of Kingdom Holding, who in returned called Trump a "disgrace", and suggested that he should drop out of the presidential race because of his remarks about banning Muslims:

"@realDonaldTrump You are a disgrace not only to the GOP but to all America. Withdraw from the U.S presidential race as you will never win."

Donald Trump later called the prince a "dopey"

"Dopey Prince Alwaleed Talal wants to control our US politicians with daddy's money. Can't do it when I get elected,"

Analysis: After the shooting rampage by a Muslim couple in San Bernardino, California Trump has been lambasted from abroad and America itself. His comments have yet offended more people, and slowly losing his chance at winning presidency.

Renaming art for cultural sensitivity - Alora Lieck

link
A Dutch museum has currently been in the workings of a new initiative called "Adjustment of Colonial Terminology" Basically they will be changing the original names of hundreds of works of art to more "sensitive" titles. One pice called "young negro girl" to "girl with fan"
So far the museum has gotten lots of positive feed back from minorities in the area who have stated that many of the names were offensive. However there has been a handful of criticisms calling this initiative "whitewashing" To an extent I agree. I think that it is silly to rename historical pieces because they are offensive. Yes, the majority of said artists were white, racist old guys BUT that is apart of history. I think it is silly to try and hide our history and pretend it never happened. Just like the northerners during reconstruction tried to convince themselves that the civil war wasn't that bad.

No such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain // Kai Jones 1st period

In this article the human brain and it's characteristics related to gender are discussed. Human brains are not as gender specific as people have thought it too be. Scientists have discovered that the brain has both masculine and feminine aspects. Some people might have more feminine or masculine aspects in their brain and some have an even combination of both. There are not two types of brains, male and female. 1, 400 MRI scans were used in finding this discovery.

Gender has been a huge influence in U.S history. Women were always thought to have been less superior than men because their brains were supposedly different. This discovery shows that gender is more than just our sexual organs. Single-sex education was based on the idea that the two brains were somehow different and therefor girls would need to be taught in a different way than boys.

Madeline Jones 4th Period: Man Aids ISIS

Mohamed Elshinawy from Maryland has been accused of receiving $9,000 to help aid a terrorist attack in the United States. Mohamed was arrested Friday and charged with an attempted to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, obstruction of an investigation, and giving false statements.
The FBI filed a criminal complaint stating that Elshinawy received about $8,700 from people overseas whom he believed were connected to ISIS. The money came from Western Union and Paypal accounts.
This man can be compared to Benedict Arnold. Benedict Arnold originally fought for the American Continental Army but switched over to the British Army. Benedict Arnold is infamous for being a traitor to America. Just like Mohamed Elshinawy is now.

Bill Cosby sues his accusers Paul Rakde (5th)

Summary- Bill Cosby is suing seven women who have accused him of sexually inappropriate conduct. The lawsuit states Cosby is suing the women "for their malicious, opportunistic, and false defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against him. The suit states that Cosby is seeking "relief from the defendants' international campaign to assassinate his charter for their own financial gain by rewarding him"

Analysis- Bill Cosby has had a rough last couple of years and for him to be suing woman that falsely accused him of sexual misconduct is outrageous. I do not think that seven women would do something like this to get him in trouble. This is a hard case to win because it has been so long since it has happened which should hint that there was something wrong there. Bill Cosby is probably not going to win this case because there is not enough evidence to prove that the women are falsely accusing him of doing this.

Protesting the NRA: Every month, for three years - Lia Kerkman 6

Martina Leinz has been to over two dozen NRA ( national riffle association). She says that her experience in high school with a fellow student bringing a riffle to school and harming several people really opened her eyes to the danger of gun rights. Some have been at protests every month for the past year, ever since Sandy Hook. She now, along with many others fights for the idea that the  association should work further towards their original idea that they protect the right to bare arms while still ensuring that their weapons are in safe sane hands.

It seems like every other story you hear now is all about gun control. At this point I think that all of these people aren't making the big difference that theyre looking for despite their relentless efforts. You can try to prevent unqualified people from getting guns all you want but when it comes to it anybody has the right for self protection in the form of a legal gun. And even if you found some way to make that restriction theres no doubt in my mind that anyone has the capability to get their hands on one.

"Bill Cosby Sues 7 of His Accusers" by Jack Higgins period 6

Regardless of wether or not he actually did it, Cosby made a smart move (probably under the advisement of his attorney[s]) in suing many of those who have recently come forth accusing him of sexual assault for defamation of character, which could be intelligent (especially if guilty) by pushing those characters back a step and repositioning them so that they'd simply be looking for a way out of the situation, rather than continue pushing for more money out of Cosby himself or perhaps his incarceration. Those kind of things seem to happen less when the defendant becomes the accuser himself and files a countersuit (although I may very well be wrong, I have no statistics that show that).

Things have not been recently going very well for Bill Cosby, and perhaps rightfully so. Those heavy accusations have resulted in several television and movie projects supposed to be starring Cosby being delayed or completely cancelled, his honorary degrees from Boston University, Fordham University, Marquette University, and Brown University being revoked, and his relationship with his family being heavily damaged.

Hopefully justice prevails in this situation with whomever the persons in the right and in the wrong are.

First Saudi Arabian women elected into public council. This is the first time women could vote and run as candidates. Previously women were not allowed to drive, and dependent upon a male in their family to make all of their major decisions. Women were encouraged to attend university and encouraged to take employment.

Other countries have recently made these advancements, and it has gone on to further progress women's rights in those countries. This is a big step towards a new tomorrow in Saudi Arabia, and for he world.

Impeachment By: Emma Wall

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/02/americas/brazil-rousseff-impeachment/index.html

The passage above is discussing the possible impeachment of the president of Brazil. She does not understand where these arguments against her are coming from.  The claims say that she took money from the state-oil company that she once was the president of.  (She accepted money illegally)

I chose this because I can relate this to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson.  Their cases might be different, but it still shows that the president also has limitations.  It is good to know that congresses in other countries also have the right to impeach a president.  It provides reassurance that nobody has complete control over a country.

united States of Sensitivity- Emily Eppig 8th period

Over the last year, the number of outraged or offended people over non-extreme things has staggered. In this case, a 7th grader wore a star wars t-shirt with the words "rebel blaster" and an image of a gun on it. The student was forced to cover up his shirt and he received dispilinary punishment. This is ridiculous. First of all, a 'rebel blaster' isn't even a real weapon. It is a gun from the star wars movie franchise. Second of all, who was the shirt hurting? All is was was a young boy supporting his favorite movie.
Although gun influence and the gun law debate have been controversial issues recently, this is just a case of people being way too sensitive. If a child were to wear a shirt like this to school 10 years ago, he would be flooded with compliments not ridicule. There is nothing on earth that someone won't be offended by.
If we all just calmed a bit down and took everything with a grain of salt, America would be a much more peaceful place. As long as you're not personally attacking someone, physically or mentally, there should be no reason for you not to do (or wear) what you want.
This can relate back to the 1st amendment and the concept of 'freedom of speech'. We're not free to speak freely if everything we say will have to be taken back because someone is offended. People actually are allowed to have different opinions.

New Chipotle Outbreaks- Emily Eppig 8th period

Recently another chipotle outbreak has occurred in Boston, causing over 150 college students to be sick. After the first E.Coli cases you'd think chipotle would be able to put this behind them and learn form their mistakes, but apparently not. The poplar restaurant chain has caused the students to catch a horrific stomach illness with bad side-effects.
The first time this happened, it seemed to be squared away and everything went back to norman until it's latest outbreak. I honestly don't think chipotle should continue to be a popular chain after this incident. Even my own brother has been effected by this restaurant's inability to follow health code and keep people safe. His roommate caught the disease after eating at the resturant, causing him to have to move out of his own apartment so he didn't get sick before finals.
If it were any other restaurant, they would be destroyed and no one would go there again. Stock is going down and i really hope they either improve their act or shut down shop.
This event can relate to the many disease outbreaks that occurred in American, and even world history. these events resulted in the creation of the CDC and a more extensive understanding of diseases and how to cure them.

Erin McElhone 3rd Period: New Education Law

The No Child Left Behind law (NCLB) has been left behind and replaced by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Obama signed the bipartisan education bill a few days ago, leaving the unpopular federal education law, NCLB, in the dust. A majority of states have for several years received waivers from the Obama administration, exempting them from some of the NCLB law's toughest requirements. The new law changes much about the federal government's role in education, largely by scaling back Washington's influence. While ESSA keeps in place the basic testing requirements of No Child Left Behind, it strips away many of the high stakes that had been attached to student scores. Student scores will no longer be used to evaluate teachers and the job of deciding how to fix underdeveloped schools shifted largely back to the states. Families will now also have more access to high-quality preschools for their kids.

Before the signing the new law, President Obama made clear that he believed the goals of NCLB — namely high standards, accountability and closing the achievement gap — were the right ones. But in practice, he said, the law fell short. The NCLB law was supposed to be the improved version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Seeing that the Government is constantly shifting who they want to have the most power over the education process (federal governments or state governments) I can't see this Law will stay in place much longer than its older sibling.

Woman's place in Saudi Government-Emily Eppig

Saudi Arabia's woman-oppressing reputation has been questioned after 20 woman were elected for council seats. Although the 20 women make up a very small percentage of representatives, this is still a huge advancement in woman's rights in the Middle East. In the past, women have not been able to speak or do anything without consulting their husbands first. Them now having the ability to run, let alone be elected, shows that Arabian culture is changing and gender inequalities are being remedied.
Having women involved in Saudi Arabian politics will bring a new perspective and shed light upon different types of issues. Most of the women that ran had platforms that focused on children, pollution prevention, and funding for cultural activity centers. These ideas being represented in the government can help to improve the country as a whole
this event can strongly relate to the woman's rights movements that occurred in America during the 19th century. In both cases, oppression was combated with peaceful protests and gatherings. Thanks to the persistence of female leaders, both US women and Saudi women now have more opportunities than they did before.

War on Christmas? Christa Hamby P1

summary: The consumer advocacy organization Faith Driven Consumer wants to help conservative Christians discover which companies share the same values that they do. Within two weeks of the Starbucks inncident, the Christian consumer advocacy group Faith Driven Consumer (FDC) seized upon the mini-controversy as a chance to promote its latest product, the faith equality index, which rates companies based on their "faith-friendliness." In early November, the organization issued a press release announcing that Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme were more faith-friendly than Starbucks, and that consumers ought to buy coffee there instead

Until the brainwashed masses contain their holiday to the single day that is supposed to be the actual holiday, and not expand it into a two or three-month public orgy of consumerism accompanied by constant, unnerving, unwanted, discriminatory displays of cultish symbolism and horrible, simplistic, ear-splitting, mind-numbing "music," they don't get to complain about anything. The war is on those of us who can't stand your ridiculous holiday and want nothing to do with it. People should keep they’re ridiculous superstitions to themselves, and stop brainwashing future generations. Starbucks is a publicly traded company, whose reason for existence is returning money to its stockholders. Many Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and godless atheists drink coffee and will spend money for it. If Starbucks decides to pursue their business at the risk of losing yours and Trump's, that's to serve their investors. That's the free enterprise system.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/three-years-later-sandy-hook-parents-continue-fight-for-change/
Three years ago today, a horrible and deadly tragedy befell the students of Sandy Hook Elementary School, their friends and families, and our nation as a whole. We wept with those who were hurting after a insane terrorist entered the school and created one of the deadliest mass-shootings that our country has ever seen. The parents who lost their beloved children on that day have since been fighting for a change in gun regulation because there is an almost unbelievably high amount of deaths as a result of gun violence. In the days since the attack on Sandy Hook alone, there have been around 555 children killed at the hand of a gun. The trend in mass shootings has only gone up. The parents are saying that the time to act is now because this isn't going to just go away.

The movement to stop reckless gun violence and tighten gun control reminds me of the American Temperance Society that was active in the U.S. in the 1820's. Their goal was to completely stop the consumption of alcohol as they believed that it would lead to a decrease in violence and slovenliness and an increase in peace and happiness and success as a society.

This movement is in its earlier steps and its unclear as to whether it is likely to fall or fly. Hopefully, unlike the efforts made my the American Temperance Society, it will go far and have a huge positive impact on our society and eventually the world. I believe that an increase in gun regulation will impart a monumental change for the better.

Alexis Williams -Boycott Against the New Star Wars Movie

There's been lots of talk about the new Star Wars movie. Though there been lots of love and people can't wait to see it, other oppose it. They say that since one of the main characters (John Boyega) is Africa American, it encourages white genocide. People have started the hashtag on Twitter #whitegenocide.
I immediately linked this to the civil tights movement in the 1960s. This is just awful how people are going against such a great film for such a dumb reason. In the civil rights movement many blacks sacrificed lots of things for their rights. Many were injured or killed. People like Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks or even groups like the little rock nine who fought long and hard to get to where we are today. It was very tough especially in those times with things like the KKK and other racist people in America trying to hinder them from being equal. It's so sad that all that hard work and effort and fighting got us here. Where people can't deal with an African American man in a movie.

NASA Satellite- Carli Copell Per.6

NASA Satellite images show most polluted countries in the world

This article is talking about a satellite that NASA has come up with to show us the most polluted countries. Nitrogen Dioxide is a common emission given off by factories and many manufacturing agency's that are found in cities. This creates the  brown haze w see hovering over the city, smog.

Synthesis:
This is a very important topic to bring up. If we keep living like this, and producing more and more pollutants into our world and cutting down trees and plants that provide oxygen for us, we will eventually run out. We cant keep living like this. This can not only relate to the past but to our future. If we don't stop now it will only get worse.

Bill Cosby sues 7 women for defamation -Bob Cummins, Period 6

Cosby counter-sued seven of the women who sued him on charges of defamation.  Cosby is suing on the defense that they were the ones that defamed him; because of their charges, they hurt his clean family reputation and caused NBC to pull the plug on the sitcom Cosby was planning.  Cosby's lawyer calls their accusations "malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory."  The lawyer of the women, Joseph Cammarata, said on Monday that his clients wanted to take the issue to court, saying that it's strange that Cosby only filed against these seven, "when there are scores of other women who have made similar allegations."  Because of these accusations, Cosby has lost awards, money, and shows.
The way I see it, there's no way Cosby can be innocent of these crimes.  Never has he actually said, "No, I did not do that," and he gets uneasy whenever the subject is brought up.  Now it would be ridiculous if the claims from all over 40 of these women were true.  Obviously some are just opportunistic and want money or attention, but Cosby's lawyers are in for it in court.  Their point about defamation is rendered completely useless if it turns out that he actually raped women.  This situation is similar to that of Andrew Jackson's situation when he was running against John Quincy Adams, whose supporters told rumors about him to defame him; it's also strangely similar to the many accusations of Andrew Johnson from those who impeached him.  Some were true, but others were probably lies to hurry the coming sacking of Johnson.

Recently, thanks to social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter, political protests in the US are becoming more coordinated and unified. Students at Boston College have been creating and distributing information throughout the country on how to have an effective protest against institutionalized racism in colleges. Their distribution efforts have been very successful, as many colleges across the country have now tried their ideas.
College students have always been political protesters in the US, starting with joining the fight for the American Revolution in the late seventeen hundreds to the Civil Rights movement of the sixties. Hopefully this generation of political protesters will be able to get things changed in this country as their predecessors did.

Trump rises to 41%- Simon Waranch 3rd period

Everyone thought Trump was going down when Ben Carson took the lead a couple weeks ago, Last week, after Trump announced that he wanted to ban all muslim travel to the US, his poles skyrocketed. Earlier this week, a new national pole says that Trump has 41% of the republican vote. This pole put Ted Cruiz at second with 14%.

This is scary to think that a man as crazy as Donald Trump could have 41% of the republican voters. Donald Trump is a openly racist, he has said that we should build a wall on the border to stop immigrants from getting in, he has also said numerous incredibly negative comments toward women. His newest comment is to ban All muslim travel to the US. That is a big statement, saying that 1.6 billion people can't travel to the US? how can he be the number 1 republican? How can people actually support what this man is saying. The truth is, if Trump was elected as the republican nominee, that wouldn't be that bad. I think when it comes down to it, Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders would beat Trump in the election.

Everyone knows that New York is an expensive place to live. But, I bet most people didn't know that it is expensive just to be an inmate. That's right, last year "the city's annual cost per inmate was $167,731," which is about how much tuition would cost to attend an Ivy League school for four years.  New York's most infamous facility, Rikers Island, could be to blame. It costs a tremendous amount of money to staff and maintain an island. New York's entire Department of Correction spent about $2 billion last year . Rikers Island spends $30.3 million annually just to cover the cost of transportation.
Wow! For me, this is hard to understand because $2 billion is such an enormous dollar amount and it is hard to wrap my mind over exactly how much money that is, and exact what you could buy with it. However, it does seem like too much money is being spent in New York to house inmates. Annually, it costs $167,731 per inmate. Some people, even families, don't even make that much in terms of their annual salary.  It probably isn't as easy as it seems, but to me it seems like New York could easily cut down their spending by a couple of thousand dollars a year. Imagine what else New York could do with that money. Let's pretend that a meal costs $5. If New York cut back their spending on inmates by $100,000 out of their $2 billion dollar annual spending. New York could buy 20,000 meals. By doing further math I calculated that they could feed almost 55 people a meal everyday of the year. New York could feed the homeless person that is on the street corner, or the 2 year old baby in a family that only makes $40,000 a year and has 3 other kids. It may not seem like such a huge change when you take into account the total population of New York, but making any change is still a change.

350 Infants Possibly Exposed To Tuberculosis - Olivia Browne Period 6

Three hundred and fifty infants were possibly exposed to tuberculosis at a California hospital by a hospital employee. An additional 368 mothers or parents, and 308 employees were also potentially exposed, a spokeswoman told CNN. The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose said it was notified in mid-November that one of its employees was suspected of having active tuberculosis. That employee, who worked in the area of the newborn nursery, was placed on leave.

Analysis: The Author is Dana Ford and she appears to be a non-bias party. This article was created on December 12th, right after the incident had taken place, adding to the urgency. I had no prior knowledge of this event. The Audience is the concerned American public and this story has a negative effect on them. The reason for writing this article was to educate the American public on this terrible event. This directly relates to the reform movement around health care during the reform era.

GOP Preparing for Contested Convention by Caroline North 9th period

The 2016 Republican Party presidential candidates are preparing for their upcoming debate in Las Vegas as Donald Trump still maintains a strong lead with the primaries fast approaching.  Even as Trump continues to unleash incendiary comments which cause a great deal of unrest and fuels anger with immigrants and minority groups, he remains popular in early voting states and nationally.

With Trump running in the 2016 election, he has drawn a significant amount of attention and publicity to the Republican Party.  Although the other Republican candidates are threatened by the current lead of the political party, they also view Trump as a positive asset who has brought all Republicans into a new light, and many new viewers to the Republican debates.  If Trump was elected president, our nation would face significant changes most likely including a decrease in minorities and a halt in immigration.  Many fear if Trump were elected, the next four years would turn into a full Donald Trump reality show.  The media adores Trump because of the outrageous things he says, he would be able to veto things just because he can, and he would make the entire globe his own personal playground.  Many are skeptical of the impact Donald Trump being elected would have on this nation.

First women elected to office in Saudi Arabia - Erin O'Day

Saturday's election in Saudi Arabia marked the first time women could vote and run for office, and it saw 17 women get elected. Yet women voters in Saudi Arabia complained about the voter registration process and the segregation of male and female voters. Also, those women running spoke up about how difficult and restricted they were in campaigning. But this election is a significant step forward. The roles of women in the Saudi Arabian kingdom are changing: the amount of women in the workforce is increasing, and the King has been appointing more and more women to government positions.

While it is truly amazing that the rights of women in Saudi Arabia are improving, they still have a long way to go, just like the women of our nation. When American women fought for suffrage and achieved it with the 19th amendment, they knew they would still have to fight for equality and fair treatment, and in fact we still are doing that today.

Maid, 11, accuses cricket star of abuse: 'They used to beat me with sticks'-- Demi Tomsides

Mahfuza Akhter, "Happy", is an eleven year old girl that was the live in maid for cricket hero, Shahadat Hossain and his wife, Nritto Shahadat. Happy claims that she was abused by her former employers and that "They used to beat me with sticks, kitchen utensils, punch me, and scratch me. I would be slapped a lot,". Happy lived with her impoverished extended family. Since they often couldn't find a next meal, her grandmother sent her to work for this family. Happy would be locked in her room, forced to sleep in the bathroom, and given the scraps of spoiled food. She decided that she would rather beg on the streets than live in that house, so when the other maid was coming in Happy made a run for it. She was slow, limping, and trying to cover her hurting, swollen eye while she ran down the streets of Dhaka. When she stopped to rest, a local reporter found her and took her to the hospital. She was admitted with two swollen eyes, several dislocated body parts, and extensive bruises. The celebrity couple (who many used call a hero) was captured and sent to jail. The wife is on bail on humanitarian grounds (the irony) because she's going to have a baby. Many believe this trial is going down as one of the biggest celebrity trials in the country's history.

This was a disturbing article, but one that ended on a slightly hopeful note of Happy finally getting to be just that: happy. She was sent to a shelter and has made some friends. But taking it back a couple steps, this whole situation is absolutely horrendous. In 2006 Bangladesh's Labor Act forbade employing a child under the age of 14, but unfortunately looking in a home and finding an young girl is more common than not. One of the most influential books of all time has been A Chirstmas Carol by Charles Dickens. We know the story today to be a nice holiday tale about a cranky miser who is visited by three ghosts, and in the end is miraculously transformed into a "God bless us everyone" kind of guy. But in the time that the book was published, it was a political statement that challenged the current political ideals, especially of that revolving around child labor. Children working awful conditions for cheap labor was a problem back then (in the Industrial Revolution) and it is still a problem today. We all need to be aware of the problem and help the world fix it.

Emily Miller- Obama proposes "the best chance we have to save the planet"

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/12/world/global-climate-change-conference-vote/index.html

On Saturday, President Obama proposed a climate change agreement at a conference in Paris: countries must keep their greenhouse gas levels below 2 degrees Celsius (about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The agreement has to be ratified by 55 countries to be put into effect. Obama says that this is our chance to save the planet, although others say that it is too late. The agreement has its faults- small countries who aren't as responsible for polluting the atmosphere as big-corporation, industrial countries, will have to pay for a problem that they didn't really cause.

I think any plan that helps the environment is a good plan. However, I also think that countries with higher greenhouse gas levels should have more restrictions to pay for the pollution they put into the atmosphere. For instance, China and the US account for 14% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. We should limit our pollution proportionally.

Gunman shot down -Avery Yoss

On Saturday night, a man holding a gun walked into a Walmart in Pennsylvania. He was threatening to shoot when policemen arrived. He refused to put his gun down so the police were forced to shoot him down. He was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead on Saturday night. The man still has not been identified and no one else in Walmart was harmed.

I feel like this gunman was all talk. Or he had been under the influence, because why an empty Walmart? On a late Saturday night? Its sad that this is what our world has come too, with shootings or attempted shootings happening all the time.

John Lennon killer opens up about motives -Bob Cummins Per. 6

In 1983, reporter Jim Gaines interviewed Mark David Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon in 1980; he told Gaines about his life and his motives for the murder.  He said that there was a voice in his head repeating,"do it."  He recalled that as a child, he wanted to be a Beatle, but after he heard about Lennon making the comment that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus," he quickly grew to hate Lennon.  In the late 1970's, he read up on John Lennon, and hated him more.  His other great influence was The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. With these influences, along with claims that Satan was sending him mental messages, he decided to kill John Lennon.
This man was obviously not in his right mind when he killed Lennon, and this article mentioned that he had phases of schizophrenia throughout his life.

Adriana Hinojosa, 8th, Police Officer Kills North Texas student--motive?

Okay. I'm thoroughly confused about this whole article. Yesterday a student from the University of North Texas was shot by a police officer until he met death because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The student, Ryan McMillan, was seen in the school's parking lot holding an ax. Earlier that night, the officer had received several phone calls about there being a breakage of car windows in that same lot. Whether there is a correlation between Ryan and the car robberies, we don't know. What we do know is that Ryan was "wielding" the ax. The dictionary definition of "wielding" is "to use effectively." That being said it seems that Ryan was indeed swinging the ax at the officer. According to the article, Ryan was shot as he "advanced at the officer while holding the ax." This is just too vague for me. Advanced? Advanced could literally mean he was running, calmly walking, skipping, etc. And "holding the ax"? That makes it seem like he was passively holding the ax. This writer is inconsistent. What I am having trouble understanding is why police officers are equipped with tasers? I mean in a case like this it seems pretty logical to use a taser as opposed to a handgun thus robbing this 21 year old of his life when it obviously wasn't aggressive enough of an encounter. If it was, the journalist who wrote this article would not have such trouble deciding on what intensity level of adjectives to use. She is wavering between two different intensity levels of word choice thus making it seem she, too, is unsure. The article totals at about 10 sentences and the officer has not been able to prove anything he has said as true. I don't know about you, but this is already giving off a vibe of yet another innocent killing. Don't get me wrong, though. What that guy was doing in the middle of the school parking lot equipped with an ax in the middle of the night sure looks bad. But whatever it may have been, he didn't deserve to die. The officer obviously did not have enough of a motive considering he has not been able to give any major news source concrete evidence or really evidence of any kind.

Graffiti are spray-painted at two mosques in Southern California - Ari Robinson, Period 3

Graffiti are spray-painted at two mosques in Southern California

Summary: In Hawthorne California, two mosques were spray painted with Christian slogans. Police have labeled it as a hate crime. One mosque said "Jesus" and the other said "Jesus is the way." There was an item resembling a hand grenade near one of the mosques, and bomb squad came, but it was only a replica. These events follow the Friday intentional fire at a mosque in Palm Springs.

Analysis: Freedom of religion, anyone? These events are an atrocious rebellion of our country's very founding principles. This is not a Christian country. Therefore, shouldn't Muslims be able to practice their faith? Shouldn't any religion be able to practice their faith? Hate crimes against Muslims are becoming more and more frequent. Prejudice against Muslims is becoming very widespread. It seems as though soon, it could be an even larger issue than racism against African Americans.

Sandy Hook (extended) By M'Lynn Musgrove

Summary: On December 14, 2012, after killing his 52 year old mother, Adam Lanza drove five miles from his home to Sandy Hook Elementary school, where roughly 700 students sat in their classrooms. After shooting his way through the front entrance of the school, Lanza proceeds to kill 20 students (ages 6 and 7) and six adults. Eleven minutes after the first shot is fired, Lanza walks into Victoria Soto's classroom, kills six children, Soto and her teachers assistant, and himself. Later that day, President Obama gives a televised address where he states we must "come together" and change in order to "prevent more tragedies like this..."

Analysis: I have written multiple blogs on this topic before and I am sure I will write more blogs on this topic, but it never ceases to amaze me when I think about how big an issue gun control is in this country, and how we have not made real progress in the last handful of years in attempting to put a stop to these mass school shootings.

Carlos Joglar- Progress for Saudi Women

Source: http://news.yahoo.com/initial-results-show-3-saudi-women-elected-first-123633610.html

Today, the progressive announcement has bee made that 20 women have been elected for local government seats. These women vary in locality, coming from big cities to small towns. Even though this 20 is a mere 1% of the 2,100 available positions, this is still seen as a step towards gender equality for women. Since 2005, this has been the first election open to women. Most women used social media to their advantage. Strict rules restrict public gender mixing, so opposite genders could not address each other in person. The General Election Committee also helped women because they recognized the women who hide their face in the traditional full body veil, so they banned both men and women from showing their face in campaigns.

This is amazing news. Of course, compared to the United States, Saudi Arabia is still in a very bad state in terms of gender equality. However, one must recognize that women didn't have the right to vote in the US until 1920. Also, taking into account Saudi Arabia's oppressive culture, this step is hugely progressive. I would also like to remind everyone that, even though Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country, oppressing women is not a Muslim problem. It is a Saudi Arabian problem. Many other Muslim countries, like Turkey, have as much of an issue with gender equality as the US has. All in all, it's great seeing feminist ideals and gender equality spread.

Gunman shot at Walmart by Shara Jeyarajah p8

Recently in Pennsylvania, a man went to a local Walmart wielding two hand guns. He started to threaten people, and the local police was soon called in. After he refused to drop his guns, he started pointing them at police officers. He was shot in his upper chest area, and sustained fatal injuries. The gunman has not been identified. No officers or shoppers were injured.
I find it despicable that someone would be so horrible to make people believe that they were going to die. I cannot fathom how anyone could be so motivated to spread terror. Background checks when purchasing guns are required, but I believe that mental evaluations and more airtight checks would greatly benefit us.
This connects to apush because after the publication of the second amendment, it was abused and is still used to justify events resulting in many deaths.

STAR WARS T-Shirt Gets Boy In Trouble --Madeleine Norton, 4th period

This past Thursday a 7th grader by the name of Colton was wearing a shirt depicting a stormtrooper holding a "rebel blaster", an imaginary gun of the Star Wars universe. He was warned by his authorities to cover it up, zipping up his jacket so that the derogatory image could not been seen as derogatory towards  guns or to make some kind of stand. Understandably his father is upset, saying, "It’s political correctness run amok; you’re talking about a Star Wars T-shirt, a week before the biggest movie of the year comes out." Colton has reportedly worn this same shirt several times before with no problem. But with things the way they are now, gun hype is especially touchy.

This can be directly connected to the first amendment (the right to freedom of religion, speech, press, peaceful assembly, and petitioning for governmental redress of grievances) and second amendment (the right of the people to keep/bear arms). In this instance, is Colton's freedom of speech is being infringed by him having to cover up his shirt depicting a gun? And even though the gun is fantastical and the boy is claimed to have "not a violent bone in his body" (according to his father Joe Southern), cold this really influence bad behavior? Star Wars? right before its opening?
I myself am not quite sure, since the whole ordeal seems a bit over-reactive to me. But in this instance the child has worn the shirt many times before, clearly showing that current gun issues are arousing fear in public school systems, and strictness for the safety and well being of everyone. Apparently you just can't be too safe.
