Why the U.S. should take more refugees- Bethany Wolfe 3rd

summary:
There is an ongoing humanitarian crisis all over the world. Refugees from Syria and Iraq are desperately looking for asylum, but Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan are overwhelmed. Because Europe is still debating the issue, all eyes are on the U.S.
The author goes on to explain 3 reasons the U.S. should step up. The first is leadership. the U.S. is a leader of humanitarian response and has resettled more refugees than the rest of the world combined. Due to geography, refugees cannot come directly to America, and the program is entangled in timidity and bureaucracy. The author suggests this has to do with the fear of a second 9-11. The second reason is responsibility. The current Syrian crisis is tied to the repercussions of the Iraq war. For example, many of ISIS leaders are left from the Baathist army and because of tolerance to poor government, many Iraqi have joined Syrian refugees. The last reason is self-interest. Resettled refugees have largely benefited the U.S. in a number of ways from education to economy to industry, and we would not be who we are today without them.
analysis:
This article is meant to educate and persuade people. It definitely persuaded me to believe that America should be doing everything we can to offer asylum to refugees. As the author stated, refugees given asylum have paid back the U.S. tenfold, so what's holding us back? America is known for its liberty and abundance of opportunity. If these refugees are trying their best to escape hostile situations to start a new life, how can we deny them that opportunity?

  1. Bernadette NEgrete: I understand that the US could help with this problem but the fact is, we are pretty overpopulated as well. The only way we can even put a dent in the amount of refuges, is if a number of countries contribute to the issue. If about 4 or 5 countries open their gates, millions will find asylum not just a couple thousnad.

  2. Honestly, it's kind of exasperating how people expect the U.S. to deal with their issues. We have our own problems. Plus we have helped many refugees as well.
