Claudia Anthony "Why U.S. should do more for refugees"

This article lists the reasons why the U.S. should be doing more to help Libyan refugees. The United States has been a leader during humanitarian crises like this since WWII. They should take initiative and help these refugees, rather than leaving it all to European countries. Many people fear that letting people in through the refugee resettlement program will bring terrorists into the country, however, it is a very unlikely way for terrorists to enter. Despite the fact that it is the United States' responsibility to help the refugees, they could also help to improve the country. Many refugees, have gone on to do amazing things and help America, like the German refugee scientists who who helped to win World War II.

During colonial times, many Native American tribes did not get along with the English settlers. For example, the settlers of Jamestown had many skirmishes with the Powhatan. However, they both soon realized that they could benefit from having a peaceful relationship. The English could gain food and a farther trade route, and the Powhatan wanted some of the settlers' weapons. Similar to the relationship between the Native Americans and the settlers, the refugees could end up being beneficial to America and help to further form this country.

  1. I do wonder if we, the U.S., could do more in the countries we help. Could we help in their schools, or perhaps even give a village a well or flock of sheep, to help their developing economy.

  2. We as "the land of the free and the home of the brave" should be doing more to help refugees. If immigrants, and migrants can come here by choice, and we welcome them, those who desperately need a place to go should be welcomed as well.

  3. I would rather welcome a thousand people into our country and have one of them be a terrorist, then let a thousand people suffer. Could just be me though

    1. I agree Kate I think that helping thousands of people would be more beneficial than not helping just because there would be a possibility of one being a terrorist.
