In the
article I read this week, retired General John Allen tells ABC news that “We’re
not done yet” in regards to the U.S. mission against ISIS. Although the U.S.
has had some major successes in fighting against the ISIS terrorists over the
past year, the U.S. military still has a lot of work ahead of them in finding a
solution to this problem. With help from Arab allies, the United States has
been able to carry out airstrikes targeting the ISIS group in Syria and Iraq.
However, General John Allen does not express any interest in targeting the
Syrian President Bashar Assad’s military, as he believes that “No matter what
we do militarily, Syria has got to be solved at a political level”.
Lastly, the
Obama administration claims that it wants to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees in
2016, bringing up an interesting viewpoint from the General. Allen believes
that the U.S. should be more cautious, as taking in more refugees leaves a
potential threat for ISIS infiltration into those refugee groups. Overall this
topic is one of high importance and how the U.S. continues to handle it will affect
many across the world!
Analysis-
This article I have chosen has really caused me to think more about world
events. This situation is very serious as many lives are at risk and this conflict
poses a threat to several countries. I can relate this article back in U.S.
history to when the British won the French and Indian War. Like the U.S. troops
against ISIS, the British and American colonies had several successes in the
French and Indian War and came out as the dominant world power. However, also
like the U.S. troops against ISIS, there was still a lot of work ahead for the
colonists. The fight for freedom was not over and the colonists would soon be
facing more challenges.
That is a great way to synthesis and relate this to us history. Hopefully we can learn from our history and take effective strides to win the war against ISIS
