Suicide is not something to play around with. In 2013-2014, 31% of students in the Penn State college who sought help from the counselor had seriously considered suicide. More and more people are purposely harming themselves by cutting, hitting, burning, and pulling their hair out without intending to kill themselves. Almost 21% of the students who wanted help from the counselor's had harmed themselves. There are different reasons why people think of suicide. Mabey it's because they have problems with their family or they are getting bullied. More then 1,000 college students kill themselves every year. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for ages 15-24. A lot of schools are actually trying to help the students with suicide problems. The Ohio State University teaches the first year students, during orientation, how to recognize the first signs of suicide and how to approach a person with that kind of problem. Something that all colleges and university's are trying to do is remove the stigma without seeking mental health services. They think it is better this way because the person won't feel so alone because he/she is not the only one going through that problem.

Suicide is definitely not something to joke around with. The sad thing is, many people (especially teens) are romanticizing suicide. I personally think it's terrible. Suicide is a real problem that needs to be taken seriously and not looked at as something "beautiful." I am very happy about the suicide prevention centers and suicide prevention hotline numbers here in America. It puts my mind at ease knowing that there are people in America who take suicide as seriously as it should be. Madeline Jones 4th period.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Maddie. Suicide is a very serious problem that isn't taken very seriously sometimes. As time has gone on though, there has been many improvements in caring for those struggling before they act on their suicidality -such as at Ohio State University.
This is great that Ohio State University is doing something to help combat this. Colleges make so much money they should be doing more in terms of mental health services, if only they could have classes to help people be kinder, more respectful and take mental health seriously. I know that suicide is primarily a mental health issue but romanticizing and other ways of not taking suicide seriously as well as bullies, can really push someone over the edge.
ReplyDeleteSuicide should be taken seriously and not be an internet meme. Kudos to Ohio State for their dedication to preventing suicide. It is truly something all colleges and schools need nowadays and I hope this kind of dedication becomes a normal routine someday in the near future.
