Kentucky county clerk bites off more than she can chew - Eleni Loving

Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk, was recently arrested for denying a marriage license to all same sex couples due to her religious beliefs. She was sued by two same sex couples and two straight couples.  Judge David Bunning ordered Davis to issue the licenses, but she refused as she said she "could not betray her conscious." Because of this decision Judge Bunning ruled Davis was in contempt of court for disobeying his order and sent her to jail. After this ruling a motion began on Davis' behalf supporting her decision and speaking out against same sex marriage and how it didn't coincide with their religion. Her appeal was already rejected by the Supreme Court, but now she has appealed again.

This article was published today September 7th, by an the Associated Press and posted on the NBC website. Although the story was based in Kentucky which is a mostly socially conservative state, the article presents no specific bias and seems to be for a general audience. Prior to reading this article I knew only a little bit about how gay marriage became legal all over the county, and I didn't know much about what was happening in places where some people didn't agree with it. I think people should limit their religious and social views to appropriate settings. Kim Davis' job description includes giving marriage licenses, and when the law changed to allow gay marriages, she should have quit if she couldn't do that because of her religious beliefs, rather than refusing to obey the law. She shouldn't be surprised if she's arrested when she doesn't follow the law. Personally, I respectfully disagree with Davis and her supporters.

  1. I agree that people like Davis shouldn't hold jobs like that where their job conflicts with their religious beliefs. Davis consciously knew she was breaking the law by denying the married couple a license and by trying to get an appeal is a pathetic attempt at trying to justify her discrimination.
