James Blake, former tennis star, was wrongly thrown down and handcuffed by a police officer outside of a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday, September 9th. He was detained for 15 minutes before the police officer realized he was not responsible for whatever crime the police officer thought he was committing. He was then released and is now calling for the police officer to be fired, rather than the minor suspension he received.
I feel that James Blake is calling for quite a bit more than just the police officer to be fired, but rather that the officer never holds a firearm and/or badge ever again. I think he's right. The officer is a criminal, and for this sort of crime, we should have zero tolerance. More importantly, perhaps, any police officer who neglected to immediately report this crime should be fired as well. Maybe even be charged as well. People need to get away from the idea that cops are allowed special privileges to commit these crimes

Technically the officer did commit a felony (assault with a deadly weapon), however, he is an officer of the law, and his job is to detain those who he believes are in violation of the law, so there are many stances one can take on this argument.
ReplyDeleteI think that police officers should pay more attention to detail and analyze the situation before they jump to conclusions. I think that firing the police officer is a bit extreme but there should be a higher punishment than suspension. -Mattie Whisler 9th Period Flex
