Darby McMahon Pd#9 New England Cottontail Hops Off Endangered List

For a long time cottontail rabbits have been absent in their homes from New York to Maine. But efforts from public organizations have brought them back! In 2006 the New England Cottontail was put on the endangered species list. Unlike the Eastern Cottontail which has flourished in these areas. New England Cottontails relies on coverage from bushes and brush, while the Eastern Cottontail can stand any habitat. With expansion and developement in the Northeast, many new homes are being put up and bushes torn down therefore the Eastern Cottontail moved in.Whats important about the return of the New England Cottontail is that it shows that conservation efforts can succeed. Conservation of the rabbits began in 2008 to preserve open spaces and recreate the proper habitat. Last week the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the New England Cottontails population has reached 10,500 in protected areas. They have officially been moved off of the endangered species list! The conservation efforts will continue to keep the population of these rabbits high and keep them in their homes.

I love to see articles like this that prove if you try hard enough you can succeed in conserving these animals. This article was written by Dan Nosowitz, you can tell that he is passionate about this topic and is happy about the population of the rabbits. This article was published on September 17, which means that the news of the endangered list is new to everyone and itd good to get the news out there. I did not know anything about the endangered rabbits or the news of their hightened population, so both were a surprise to me. So it made this article that much more informational. This article certainly made me happy and im sure it had the same effect on others. This article was written to inform people of the New England Cottontails struggle of population and habitat and to show their comeback. Its good to know that New England Cottontails are safe from extinction and are now flourishing in their habitat. Today a lot of people are expanding and tearing down these rabbits homes and its good for people to see what kind of effect it is having on them.

  1. That's great news! I'm glad they are making efforts to save New England Cottontails. They should continue helping them, and use those efforts to help other endangered animals.
