Carlos Joglar: Police Fire 84 Shots At Man and Miss 83 Times

An article on yahoo.com, written by Jessie Schiewe, details how a murder suspect, Jerol Harris, got in a shoot-out with police last Friday in New York.  Out of the 84 shots fired at him, one bullet hit him in the calf, bringing him down. He is facing many felony and murder charges.

This is unbelievable to me. Not nearly enough training is required to be a cop. I did some research, and, in some states, more training is required to earn a cosmetology license than to become a certified cop. And, just the other day, a cop killed a fellow cop after thinking he was just a typical black citizen. Of course, that event opens up the issue to race, but could race be a part of training? Is there a way to weed out police officers with racial prejudices? We all remember Ferguson, which sparked a major Black Lives Matter movement. But with all these protestors, I don't see any action taken on the way police forces choose and train their officers, which truly saddens me. It makes me feel like no one is listening, especially to the African American community.

  1. This is very unsettling especially because of the many problems America has had with police lately. I believe that if these police had more practice and more training, they would have more of an understanding and respect for their position of authority.

  2. How can that even be possible, 83 misses. Not only do police need better background checks but they also need better training

  3. The fact that police have killed so many unarmed citizens in the past year, accidental or not, proves that police need way more training and requirements than what is already in place. They are supposed to protect and serve, but how are they supposed to do that when they kill the citizens they're supposed to protect? (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)
