Ava Cosentino- Should a Muslim be Able to be Elected President?

Summary:
Republican Presidential candidate, Ben Carson, makes a comment to the effect that a Muslim should not be allowed to be elected as President, due to the fact that their religious beliefs would go against the Constitution and country as a whole. the strong Christian candidate alludes to the fact that a presidents religion should matter to voters. He also goes further to say that he "absolutely not agree with that". Hope Yen reports on the situation.

Analysis:
I didn't pick this topic because I had a concrete view point on it, or because I disagree or agree with what Ben Carson said, but because this topic is very controversial and sparked an interest in me. I completely agree with the comment that he made to the effect of, if a candidates religious viewpoints run counter to the values and principles of America, they simply shouldn't allowed to be elected. To me, the opposite viewpoint that the candidate could bring in, would pose a threat on the country that America is today. However, this topic is very controversial for two reasons, it involves religion and can be looked at as being discriminatory. America, in theory, is supposed to give equal opportunity to all people of all religions, but I do believe that precautions need to in fact be taken at this day in age simply because of the the numerous terrorist attacks and treats posed upon America. To me, the only reasons that Muslims in particular should not be eligible to become president are because of the value differences between the religion and America and because the recent terrorist attacks have ultimately been organized by Muslim Extremist Terrorist groups.

  1. This is incredibly offensive, considering how bigoted and ULTRA-RELIGIOUS literally every one of the 13+ Republicans are. I agree that Presidents must be mostly neutral and someone with strong religious beliefs shouldn't be president. This means Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and basically every cookie cutter conservative who wants to turn the country into a backwards 100% christian nation. Muslims are people, Islam is a religion not a terrorist organization. Should Christians not be allowed to run because the KKK exists??????????

  2. I agree that a person should not be elected for president if they will not be able to fulfill their duties based on personal convictions. But using this logic, it would mean most Christians shouldn't be able run for office because of how that religion does not support same-sex marriage, which is now legal. So I find this claim absolutely absurd. A person should be able to have the same opportunity as anyone else, no matter his religion. And also, as a side note, not all muslim people have exactly the same religious beliefs. Just like Christians, their views vary based on the person, and some hold their ideals more closely, some more loosely. So yeah, if a person's religious beliefs interfere with the ideals of America, then they probably shouldn't run. But not because of their religion or ethnicity as a whole, just because of their PERSONAL beliefs.
