Muslim Flight Attendant Says She's Suspended for not Serving Alcohol
This article details how a woman-Charee Stanley-is being suspended for not serving alcohol as a flight attendant. In June, when Stanley discovered her Islamic faith forbids serving alcohol, she asked if accommodations could be made so she wouldn't have to. The airline told her that if her fellow flight attendants agreed, they could take over that duty for her. This went smoothly, until a colleague filed a complaint that Stanley was not fulfilling her duties and wore a headdress. As a result of this complaint, Stanley was suspended without pay for a year. ExpressJet suspended Stanley even after making the proper accommodations with her (which she met). Some have drawn parallels to Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, which Stanley has denied as being valid.
It seems to me that Stanley is dealing with a highly hypocritical, bigoted employer. After telling her what to do, Stanley followed her company's instructions, not disturbing anyone in the process. However, once a colleague complained, the company suspended her- for following exactly what they had told her to do. Stanley would be wise to file a lawsuit, as all the evidence is on her side. Additionally, comparisons to Kim Davis are bogus, because Stanley is not affecting anyone else, nor is she representing the public.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that, as long her co-workers are okay with taking on that responsibility, she should not have to serve alcohol.

ReplyDeleteThis is the systematic racism that I'm always talking about in effect right here. Where people of color are forced to drop parts of their culture that employers see as "unprofessional" simply because it makes them feel uncomfortable. And you know she's about to have a hard time getting a new job cause her record is gonna say she's uncooperative or didn't take orders well and anyone will leap at the easy angry woman of color label so they don't have to think critically about who they employ.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to see that since 9/11, the people who caused it made it harder for the people that have similar faith live a normal life with out having to worry about how people will perceive them. The only reason for this happening is because she was a woman of Islam. Islam as a whole has been branded as bad.
ReplyDeletePeople have to realize that it the criminals who are to blame not the religion that they come from. So saying all Muslims are terrorists is inaccurate and just plain prejudice.
