Helen Burns Jackson dies - Robert Earl Cummins Jr. , Student of the Year, 6th Period

This morning, Monday September 7, Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, died in her hometown of Greenville, South Carolina at the age of 92.  She had been of declining health for quite sometime.  Jesse Jackson said she was a church member, inspiration for civil rights, and a talented musician.  According to Jackson, she had two scholarships to college, but she declined when she became pregnant with him; she instead made a living as a cosmetologist.  She was very generous, offering free appointments to clients who "don't have any money" according to Jackson.  Her other son, Chuck Jackson, is a singer-songwriter.  Jackson says that she felt very grateful for her life, saying, "Lord, what have I done to deserve this?"
She raised one of the biggest, most influential figures in the world of civil rights and political activism.  She probably influenced him in ways as a child and young man that made choose the direction he took in life.  She felt extremely lucky to have a son that was so influential in the world and changed many people's views and awareness of civil rights.
