The Future of the Confederate Flag

On July 7th 2015, a white man walked into a church bible study n Charleston, South Carolina and killed nine people in hopes of starting a race war. He posted many pictures with the confederate flag which started a debate amongst people about the role of the confederate flag in the U.lS and specifically right now in South Carolina. Is this flag symbolizing racisim or showing a back ground of the South's history? maybe both.

This connects in a way during Civil War times. During this time there were slaves and racism was high. All African Americans were property unless they found a way to make it up North to Canada. Slavery was one of the many causes of the civil war, and in a way this man was trying to start a second civil war if you would. During the civil war time the confederate flag was used quite a bit in the south. Most saw it as a symbol of racism and others, a symbol of Southern pride. Is that why so many people were in an uproar once they heard this flag could be taken down permanently?

Slavery started pretty long time ago. Even in Jamestown (1607) indentured servants (who were basically a step below a slave) had come into the New World as well. But as the demand for cash crop like tobacco ans cotton grew larger the need for slaves grew as well. Hence the slave trade and everything else that came with it. Fast forwards a century or 2 and the U.S. is split. in half The North and The SOuth or Confederacy (hence the confederate flag). Many people participated in the Civil War and got slavery banished during that time. But the Confederate flag was still used during the late 1900s and eventually it was rare for someone to have it. And as racism became less common it was not seen as much

That's why it was such a big deal to South Carolina citizens to have it removed. So much so that a girl even claimed the flag in attempt to take it down herself, bu was arrested. History can repeat itself in centain things we do centuries later. That's one of the reasons history is important ecause it helps us remer past mistakes and reminds us not to do them again.

I can't believe this! Considering the fact that the Southern U.S was formed predominately on the basis of plantation slavery, individuals agreeing with the Civil War time folk, who believed the Confederate flag was a "symbol of Southern pride..." are basically stating that they believe in the benevolence of slavery! History does repeat itself, but societal standards are ever-changing. I think people supporting the Confederate's ways are stuck in the past and the United States has come too far just to be dragged back to the 1800's with a relapse of extreme racial discrimination.

  2. I agree that the confederate flag is a symbol of one of America's darker times, and if it's causing this mush uproar, should be removed.

  3. The confederate flag could be interpreted a multitude of different ways, but more often than not, it has a negative connotation to it. Whether that's fair or not is up to personal opinion, but for the conflict it has caused, it should not be displayed, due to bad taste.

  5. I think that the confederate flag has its place. It probably isn't on your front porch, waving for everyone to see it, but as a part of this nation's history, the confederate flag belongs in museums, and at historical monuments, to represent that even the greatest country in the world (arguably) has had its ups and downs.

  6. Its crazy how people find ways to bring up a horrible past. The flag brings up bad times in the history that some people want to move on and forget about, but this is not a thing you just forget and go about your business. This is one of the turning point in history that you never go back and change.

  7. The Confederate flag is a symbol of racism and slavery during a darker time in American history. It's not an symbol to be proud of nor is it especially "American" as the Confederates were not American because they seceded from the United States. Trying to keep the Confederate flag under freedom of speech is keeps this racism issue alive (Bella Di Fazio/ comment #2/ pd: 8)

  8. because of the issues and racism the confederate flag endorses and has caused I don't believe it should be displayed as a sign of patriotism. Some of the things it stands for actually clash with the traditional American values our nation was built on. Interesting topic Alexis! -Tymie Jadagu

  9. The way I see it those people that defend the flag the saying it symbolizes southern pride can't have a valid point. Of course it's easy for them to say its not a symbol of racism and oppression cause they weren't the ones being oppressed. If the people who's families were affected by the racism and slavery associated with that flag believe and see it as a symbol of racism then I believe that's how the nation as a whole should see it. 11. The Confederate Flag can be interpreted in different ways. In this case I believe it was used as symbols of racism. In my opinion, the Confederate Flag should not be portrayed.

  12. I am by no means defending this flag, but if I can remember correctly, the flag that we know as The Confederate flags wasn't actually the staple flag. It was a flag of one of the confederate states militias. The actually Confederate flag looks similar to our state flag only instead of one star there was several.

  13. Also I have to disagree on the last statement made on the second to last paragraph. Racism hasn't become THAT less common. Granted, Pre 1960's it was easily identifiable, but it is still very prevalent. Instead of being apparent with their racism, racists today either relay it in a passive way that isn't easily detectable or internalize it and deny that they are racist until it accidentally shows. For example, black women are condemned for having their certain staple features such as full lips and curvy figures like they have in the past, but say a white celebrity has the same features, she is glorified for them. This goes also with back handed compliments such as "You're pretty for a black girl" or "I would be into you if you weren't that dark." (I have received that last comment before.) I think the reason why people think racism is over is because they themselves have yet to either see it and experience it or because they have seen and experienced it but they didn't understand that it was racism.

  14. the confederate flag was formed when the south succeeded after a abolitionist president was elected. the southern economy was fueled by slavery and this flag is a symbol of racism. the confederate flag should not be allowed because it allows the symbol of dehumanization, racism and slavery to continue on.

  16. i agree completely. i did my post on the same topic as you, actually. the confederate should have been taken down and at least its finally down now. during the civil war that flag symbolized many horrible things that should not be repeated again. i hope america has enough common sense not to repeat what happened in that awful time period.
