Virus hitting Midwest could be 'tip of iceberg,' CDC official says by Megan Lafferty

In Missouri and throughout the Midwest, an uncommon virus seems to be spreading in children. There have been an unusual amount of hospitalizations, as many as 30 a day in some areas. This virus is considered to be an enterovirus. It produces symptoms like the common cold, but have severed to the point of putting children in intensive care. The particular virus that has recently popped up is the EV-D68 virus. Vaccinations for it do not exist because it is so rare. Fortunately, none of these cases have ended in a death thus far. Similar viruses have been reported in Denver. One child had to be care flighted to a hospital there because of his severe case. Similar symptoms have been reported in other areas as well. Medical officials are working to properly identify which type of EV-D68 virus has been hitting children, but until then they recommend practicing good hygiene and washing hands, etc. frequently.

This article is disturbing because the doctors are not completely familiar with the virus and they can't vaccinate against it. There is little that the doctors know about it to help us. It is sad to hear about children being exposed to the horrible virus. This article is also compelling to me because I have asthma, therefore leaving my respiratory system vulnerable to virus invasion. Hopefully the doctors can identify the virus and produce a vaccination soon.

  1. Wow, this is really scary! Especially because doctors aren't too familiar with the virus! I hope that it doesn't cause anyone to lose their life at all.
