Today, September 21, thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Manhattan to urge policy makers to take action on the subject of climate change. Many significant figures were there, including Al Gore, Evangeline Lily and the mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio.
There were many marches around the world. 40,000 marches took place in London and a small gathering occurred in Cairo. Now, more than 120 world leaders will meet on Tuesday to discuss a new global climate treaty that will be put into action in 2015.
The New York march drew people from all over the country, including people from Moore, Oklahoma who were devastated by a massive tornado. Many New Yorkers who were affected by Hurricane Sandy were also present. The campaigners chant was, "What do we want? Clean energy. When do we want it? Now."
- I personally don't know what the government can do about the climate. It's nature; it can't be tampered with by science. Sure, there could be better ways to conserve energy, but that would mean the whole world has to be willing to change their ways of life.
- I think it's important that we protect our earth for however long we have it. The more we destroy it, the closer the end of the world as we know it will arrive.
