Shipping Homeless Away By Megan Darlington P4

Sarasota is having a plan to ship homeless people away to a different area, to get them out of the city. It was a unanimous vote on Thursday to place 1,000 dollars in an account called the "Homeward Bound Fund" that would get these homeless away on a one way ticket to a different area. Officials hope that the citizens and other organizations involved will match their money on attempting to get the homeless out of the city.
This was written by Andrew Murphy from Fox. I think that this kind of movement to get the homeless out will be a huge disaster. Similar things to this have happened in the past, for example San Francisco tried to relocate people with mental illnesses to save money for the city, ending in this huge mess that didn't work at all. I think instead of choosing the easy way out, that the city should consider a homeless shelter to get these people off the street and financially stable to go out and work again. This has been successful here in Dallas in a few programs. Back on my feet partners with Marriott hotels and gets the homeless people back into the swing of life and back on their feet. If people realized that everyone is equal, than inhumane acts like this wouldn't have to occur in the first place.

this seems quite bizarre. I wonder who arranged this trouble
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think they are helping anything by doing this. Why not actually help the homeless??
ReplyDeleteThis is not a very wise idea. It's like the homeless aren't people, but garbage that needs to be thrown away. The thought of it all is very depressing. Plus, where could you possibly 'ship' these people to without causing some kind of conflict?
ReplyDeleteYou cannot solve the problem by sending it somewhere else. The only way we can deal with an abundance of homeless is creating opportunities to get them back on their feet. Giving them temporary homes for free only says to them, "Hey! Here's somewhere to live where you don't have to pay!" If they can start to get permanent jobs and work their way back into the flow of society, then we will have less of an unemployment rate and less of the population without homes.
