Sand Collapse Kills 9-year-old Girl at Oregon Beach - Corsica Steding (2nd Period)

Last Friday, at a beach in Lincoln City, Oregon, 9-year-old Isabel Grace Franks died while digging a hole in the sand that caved in on her and buried her.  It's said that she and her siblings were digging the hole together, and that she was sitting in the middle of it when the fatal event occurred.  Many beachgoers desperately tried to dig her out to no avail.  The sand only continued to cave in as they tried to dig her out.  Police and firefighters eventually dug her out after a solid five minutes.  When they managed to extract her from the sand, she was unconscious and not breathing.  They performed CPR on her and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mark Morgenstein and Faith Karimi wrote this article for CNN on August 31st. Before reading this article, I had never heard of anyone dying this way, however, it has apparently happened twice this past summer.  Unlike Isabel Grace Franks, these two victims were grown men and the sand holes that collapsed were much deeper.  There have also been many other cases of collapsing sand holes.  In fact, there were 52 cases recorded from 1997-2007.  31 of these victims died.  This article was written to share the details of the tragic event, and to also raise awareness in regards to the danger of collapsing sand holes.

  1. I never heard of anyone dying that way either. Especially knowing that there have been many other similar cases. It's sad how she was only 9 years old.

  2. I think that its good this information is out there and that this story is getting a lot of attention. These children probably had no idea what they were doing was dangerous, their parents probably also had no idea until it was too late. Such a sad story but hopefully it can save lives in the future. 4. This is actually terrifying, considering it has happened a grand total of 52 times. Weird how the media never really covers stuff like this. I guess irrelevant things like how many cokes Selena Gomez has consumed today is way more important than dying people. (Azra)

  5. Like Jazmin I've never heard of anyone dying this way, so it's crazy to hear that so many other people have died this way too. While reading the article I thought about how crazy it is how much talk is going around about celebrities nudes being released and how this story isn't just as big. In my opinion I'd rather hear quality news rather than Jennifer Lawerence's iCloud being hacked.
