Raven's running back suspended indefinitely for aggravated assault charge

It was announced today that Baltimore Raven’s running back Ray Rice has been released by the Ravens, and has had his contract terminated. Rice was already punished for an aggravated assault charge that occurred earlier this year, and he was set not to play the first two games of the Raven’s regular season. The full video of the assault surfaced today, and upon watching it, the NFL suspended him indefinitely from the league. Rice was caught punching his wife in a hotel elevator, knocking her out, and dragging her into the hotel room. He was convicted of a third-degree aggravated assault charge. Rice signed a 5 year/ 35 million dollar contract with the Ravens in 2012.

Analysis: This has been and still very much is a huge problem within all major league sports, not just the NFL. 3 cases of domestic violence have surfaced within the NFL this year alone, just a day after the first week of the regular season. Only one case has been dealt with, that player being suspended from the league as well. There have been many accusations regarding current NFL players and domestic violence. This is the first instance with legitimate video evidence, and that why there has been a huge outcry. I also don’t see why at first, Rice was serving a 2 game suspension while another player served a year-long suspension for use of marijuana, when obviously one case, Rice’s, is much worse than the other, in my opinion.

  1. He obviously didn't learn his lesson the first time, he is in the eyes of the media and a role model to young athletes. I think this punishment is well deserved.

  2. I think he should be punished more severely, assault that serious should equal jail time. The NFL responded appropriately, the Prosecution did not.

  3. This NFL is the worst. They're pretty darn good at treating violent crimes and drug possession with the same gravity as a dress-code violation. Something must be done.

  4. It is sad that the NFL gave Rice a small punishment when this story was first brought to the league's attention. It is even worse that it took months after the assault for the Baltimore Ravens and the NFL to give Rice the proper punishment he deserved. There should be no reason that the league let him practically get away with this crime.

  6. It is very harsh that they did not do anything. They will do almost anything to keep things in buisness.

  7. I agree with Veronica, I think the NFL response to the situation, although at first taken very lightly, now seems fair but I think the persecution had no justice. I believe Rice definitely deserved jail time.
