Another year another Miss America pageant. Another year where the winner depends on how good they look in a bikini. Which is why next year I would rather watch Miss Indian World. It started in 1984 as a way to honor the Native American women who has contributed the most to their tribe.
The highest award goes to the women who "best represents her culture,". This is not based on how well you dress or how "beautiful" you are or how good you look in a bikini but about how much cultural knowledge you have about your heritage. While there may be a few poc every so often in Miss American to win every winner is a person of color in Miss Indian. And the best part is is it raises awareness about the Native Americans and their culture. Its a chance to overcome any stereotypes that may be there from peoples ignorance. So yes while the Miss America pageant is starting to progress by speaking about some really tough subjects the Miss Indian Pageant is celebrating the real attributes that matter.

I think it's neat that culture is involved because it brings diversity. Raising awareness from a fun event is always great to help others and to enjoy the experience!
ReplyDeleteI also think it's great that this is becoming a thing! I think it'll really showcase how beauty comes in many different forms.
