Manhunt for Pa. trooper shooter continues - Jack VanGorden 4th period

Police continue to investigate the tragic shooting of Pennsylvania State trooper, Byron Dickson, who was killed at 10:50 p.m. last Friday. Byron, a seven-year war veteran and father of two, was killed near Scranton in what was thought to be an ambush targeting police. Dickson was accompanied by Alex Douglass, but he survived the attack, however he is still in critical condition. As the investigation heads into its third day, New York and New Jersey joined forces for the manhunt. Already, hundreds of interviews have been conducted. While officials are focusing their search in eastern Pennsylvania, other neighborhoods and areas are also being thoroughly inspected. There is a $50,000 reward for tips about the shooting, and police are asking that anyone with information to call 570-253-7126. So far, the only suspect of the crime is Jeffrey Dudek, but no charges have been filed.

This article was written by Yamiche Alcindor and Gary Strauss of USA TODAY at 3:18 p.m., September 14, 2014. Because their audience was the general public, they gave the people detailed knowledge of the events. The article did a great job of conveying the heartbreak of the people of Pennsylvania and the dedication of the police force working on the case. Although I am well aware of the plethora of police brutality cases around the nation, it makes me sad to hear of any person's passing, especially of someone dedicated to keeping us safe.

  1. It is a sad day in America when its people attack those who serve and protect them. Though anti-police sentiment has grown due to the events in Ferguson, it does not excuse the killing of police officers whose only thought is to protect the people and uphold the law to the best of their ability.
