Girl wears 'shame suit' for short skirt - Lindsey Galvan 4th period

After violating dress code on the third day of school, 15 year old Amanda Larkin was forced into wearing the school's so called 'shame suit'. According to Oakleaf High School in Orange Park, Florida, skirt length must be to the knee. Humiliated, Larkin allegedly hid in the restroom to cry and to call her mother for help. Spokesmen from the district said dress code violators have three options: in school suspension, call to parents for extra clothes, or lastly the 'shame suit'. According to the student, she was denied the option of getting extra clothes and forced into wearing the 'shame suit'. The school board attorney replied, "If we put the kid on work detail all students will know he/she is being disciplined."
I believe the administrators at this student's school took things way out of proportion. This happened of the third day of school and the student is still getting used to such rules. Also, I believe that it is unfair that the student was unable to get extra clothes and forced into humiliation. If I'm right, this could be an example of being bullied and in this case, the school administration is to blame.

  1. I honestly think that some parts of the universal dress code are sexist. Girls can't wear certain things because it's "distracting to the boys of the class" and "boys will be boys". Why are we taught to change our appearance for boys, they need to learn to focus themselves on what needs to be done. I don't think girls should be wearing really revealing shirts or shorts though. We need to find middle ground on this topic.

  2. To degrade someone like that for an obviously unintended mistake is wrong. It doesn't matter if they have broken school rules, to wear a uniform like that is like placing a scarlet letter on the girl. This school should think of better solutions.

  3. I think sexist, illogical rules like this are part of the reason why America still needs feminism.

  4. The age of the girl should mean she is a freshman in highschool. I understand some schools are more concervative than others but most dress code rules pertain to how a lady needs to present herself. If rules are to be enforced so strictly they need to be evenly enforced on guys and gals.

  5. Parents really need to give this child shaming thing a rest.
Experts in child and teen behavior all say that publicly shaming your child like this does way more harm than good. It makes them resentful to their parents causing more trouble in the future.
