Camper Sleepwalks Off Cliff- Iris Hughey p.5

This morning at around 1:00 AM, an unnamed Cincinnati man was camping in the Red River Gorge with some friends, when his slumber was suddenly interrupted as he sleepwalked off of a cliff.  John May, a Wolfe County technician, says that the man has a history of sleepwalking and believes it is the reason he fell off the cliff.  Rescuers say that the Cincinnati man's friend's called for help at around 1:15 AM when they realized their he was missing, and they soon found him at the bottom of  a 60-foot cliff, surrounded by sharp rocks and boulders.  After four hours of difficult rescuing due to foggy weather and jagged cliff edges, they pulled him up to safety.  He is now in a hospital being treated for a head injury, dislocated shoulder, and fractured leg.  Miraculously, he didn't hit any of the rocks or boulders upon impact, and, according to May, should make a full recovery.

I found this article to be very interesting because I've never heard of someone sleepwalking for that long of a distance, let alone off a cliff! I was also very pleasantly surprised to see that he came out of it without any life-threatening injuries. Hopefully he (and any other sleepwalkers out there) will learn from this experience and prevent it from happening again!

  1. Oh my!!!! This is so interesting to me. I hope that he heals quickly. I hope that this is something sleep walkers can learn from and hopefully not put themselves in dangerous environments with that type of condition! How scary to me! -Sarah Oviedo 6th Pd.

  2. I've Encountered quite a few sleepwalkers and have done it myself once. From what I hear, You in the back of your mind, is aware of what's happening but you can't control yourself. You wake up with a vague memory that doesn't really seem like a memory at all.
If that man's sleep walking expierience is anything like that, he would have probably been petrified when his body decided to walk of that cliff. I know I would have!
