9-Year-Old Killed Due to Collapsing Sand- Iris Hughey p.5

9-year-old Isabel Grace Franks was playing in the Oregon beach sand of Lincoln city on Friday when the hole she had been digging collapsed on top of her, causing her to suffocate and die.  Lincoln police Sgt. Brian Eskridge believes she was under the sand for around five minutes after she had been digging the hole with her siblings.  Many people attempted to dig Franks out of the hole, but were unsuccessful until police and firefighters arrived because the sand kept collapsing.  She was unconscious and not breathing when they dug her out, and after CPR and revival techniques were frantically performed, she was pronounced dead at the hospital she was transported to.  I hope that every person that reads this article learns how to prevent this from ever happening again, and my condolences go to Isabel's family and friends.

  2. This is awful... Going to the beach and building sand castles is supposed to be fun, not fatal. (Rachel Devine 6th period)

  5. I agree with everyone's comments so far. Who would think that a day a fun day at the beach would turn into that. That is very terrifying.

  6. It makes me so sad that this would happen to someone so small and innocent. They need to put signs saying that these are occurring. -sophia maas 2nd period

  7. This kind of unforeseen accidents need to be prevented! News like these show the need of more warning signs. Parents/guardians and people in general need to be informed.
