America Has A Foreign Tourism Problem

            Ten business associations have been created to popularize tourism in the United States again.  As President Trump restricts immigration, multi-billion dollar industry has slowed way down.  The United States is one of the top travel destinations on the planet, but since 2015, arrivals have been decreased by 6%.  The Commerce Department recorded a 3.3% drop in traveller spending in 2017, which means $4.6 billion in losses and 40,000 jobs.  For two and a half week vacationers, travel fell 11.9% last year.  U.S. Travel’s president has made it his mission to make America the “most visited country on Earth”. The “Visit U.S. Coalition” hopes that speeding visa processing times will help tourism, but believe that only small changes will need to be made to make America a big tourist destination again.  President Trump made a big deal about tighter border security and immigration and the travel ban he made in 2017 has made travel a lot harder.  Last week when Trump made derogatory statements against Central American and African countries created another distraction from things that they should be working towards.

            The article was written by Justin Bachman for Bloomberg on January 17, 2018.  The article was written to inform Americans that travel to the United States is dropping, gives reasons why, and gives some solutions to the problem.  It was written for Americans, but especially for Americans affected by travel such as people in the hospitality industry.  The article is significant because it shows how much influence the American government can have on citizens of other countries.  The decline in travel can be compared to the decline in travel after the 9/11 attacks, but the United States was able to fix it and brought travellers back to the U.S.
